Montana State Ellen Kreighbaum Head Women's Basketball Coach Tricia Binford opens her 20th season at the helm of the Bobcat program on Monday night at 7 p.m. in Worthington Arena as MSU hosts NCAA Division II Chadron State.
Montana State fans received its first glimpse of the Bobcats last Friday night as MSU handed Carroll College a 77-53 setback in exhibition action. All twelve Bobcats players scored as junior Marah Dykstra paced MSU with 19 points.
For the game, Montana State shot 53.3% from the field and connected on seven-of-23 from long distance. MSU also held a slight 30-28 advantage under the boards led by freshman Teagan Erickson with six rebounds.
The Bobcats return ten players, including four starters, from last year's squad that posted a 17-16 overall mark – the program's 17th consecutive non-losing season – and a 10-8 in Big Sky record. MSU added Esmeralda Morales, a First Team All-Big Sky selection at Portland State, along with New Mexico transfer Hannah Robbins during the offseason. Erickson, along with fellow freshmen Addison Harris and Taylee Chirrick round out the roster.
Chadron State, who will use Monday night's contest as an exhibition, also played a non-counter at Wyoming last Friday night. The Cowgirls defeated the Eagles 78-39 as CSC converted just one-of-18 from beyond the arc.
The Eagles are under the direction of a familiar face to Big Sky Conference fans. Travis Brewster, a former head coach at North Dakota and an assistant at Idaho State, is in his second season with the club. Brewster previously served as head coach at Saint Xavier (NAIA) in Chicago for two seasons.
Last winter, Brewster guided the Eagles to a 6-20 overall mark. The Eagles were picked to finish 13th in the preseason RMAC poll. On the court, four of five starters return led by Ashayla Powers, a 5-10 senior forward from Longmont, Colo. Last season, Powers averaged 12.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 rebounds per game.
