MSU welcomes back 1984 National Champions, legendary former running back
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State celebrates the 101st anniversary of its first known Homecoming this weekend, and among the many distinguished alums returning to campus are a select group who thrilled Bobcat fans 40 years ago. The 1984 Bobcats return to campus to celebrate and be celebrated their crazy romp to the Division I-AA National Championship.
The story is well-worn, but never gets old. A one-win Bobcat team with talent and experience began the season 2-2, and never lost again. The Cats won an amazing four-overtime thriller against Nevada, beat the Grizzlies in Missoula, and capped the regular season with a road win against Jim Sweeney's Fresno State team.
From that legendary group of Bobcats, 56 players and coaches returned to Bozeman this weekend.

Montana State faces Northern Colorado without one starter and a pair of reserves. Senior defensive tackle Blake Schmidt misses today's game with an injury suffered late in the Idaho State game. Junior Paul Brott, a co-starter with Schmidt though the first five games, assumes that position. A group of young players, including Talon Marsh and Hunter Sharbono, will see increased action.
Offensive tackle Cedric Jefferson, a redshirt freshman, is ill today. Sophomore Samora Ezekiel takes backup duty at both tackle positions. Reserve running back and kickoff returner Marqui Johnson remains out, and sophomore running back Jared White is expected to return kicks today.

Another Bobcat legend is in Bozeman today for different reasons. Matt Engelking, a Bobcat running back from 1993-96, rolled up 2,464 yards. That remains eighth-most in program history. Engelking's son Brayden plays linebacker for Northern Colorado (jersey number 48). The son of another former Bobcats linebacker, Corey Voggesser, is on the UNC team but was not expected to travel.

Montana State has won its first five games of a season for third time in the Big Sky era (7-0 in 1978, 6-0 in 2012, and this year).
