Graduate student shot 3-over-219 (73-73-73) in Montana State debut to earn first career tournament win at Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City
FARMINGTON, Utah – After collecting her first career tournament victory in her first tournament as a Bobcat, Becca Tschetter was selected as the Big Sky Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
After sitting out the first two tournaments of the fall due to transfer rules, the graduate student delivered an all-time first impression with her new program by shooting a 3-over par 219 (73-73-73) to win the Diane Thomason Invitational on Tuesday in Iowa City, Iowa.
The win came just a week after Lauren Greeny shot a school-record 6-under par 66 in the final round of the Eagle Invitational to win her first career tournament, leading to the junior being named Big Sky Co-Golfer of the Week on September 26.
Tschetter powered through a difficult course and tallied three birdies over a stretch of four holes on the back-nine of Tuesday's final round to wrestle control of the lead and beat the 81-athlete field by a full three strokes.
Led by their two top-five finishers in Tschetter and Greeny, Montana State finished third out of 15 teams at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, coming in behind only Big Ten opponents Iowa and Wisconsin.
The tournament wins by Greeny and Tschetter in consecutive weeks mark the first time that back-to-back tournaments were won by Bobcats since Scarlet Weidig won two weeks in a row in September 2022.
"It's something I always dreamed of," Tschetter said after Tuesday's round. "I never believed it until I did these last few weeks. Just to grab it and have the 'Cats' across my chest and have these girls behind me and the coaches believing in us—the coaches are some of the most selfless people and believe in us more than we do, so it's really cool to play for a program that's like that. It's an honor to be playing for Montana State and it's an honor to grab this win."
After playing three tournaments in three different states over the past three weeks, Montana State has a short break before closing out the fall portion of their season at the Portland State Invitational in Portland, Oregon, on October 14-15.
