Four MSU golfers finish in the top 20 in the Rose City to close out fall slate of tournaments
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Four Bobcats placed in the top-20 individually to help Montana State place third at the Portland State Invitational on Tuesday in Portland, Oregon.
Montana State carded a 35-over par 899 (305-290-304), finishing the 54-hole tournament just two strokes behind runner-up Weber State (897) and nine strokes behind tournament champion Seattle University (890).
In their final tournament of the fall, Montana State finished third in the ten-team field—ahead of fellow Big Sky Conference foes Montana, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Portland State, and Idaho State.
The third place finish marks the third consecutive top-four result for the Cats to close out the fall season after finishing fourth at the Eagle Invitational (September 22-23) and third at the Diane Thomason Invitational (October 30-November 1).
The three straight top-four finishes are the most for the Cats since at least 2011.
Montana State entered Tuesday's final round in a tie with Seattle University atop the team leaderboard, shooting a tournament-best 2-over par 290 in Monday's second round—good enough to tie for the 14th-best round in school history.
"It was a tough one out there today but anytime we can get ourselves in the final groups we are doing something right," head coach Brittany Basye said following Tuesday's final round of 304. "It's always nice to be in the final groups."
Lauren Greeny continued her torrid autumn stretch, tying for sixth by carding a 7-over par 223 (76-72-75). The result is the third straight top-six finish for the junior after she won the Eagle Invitational and took fourth at the Diane Thomason Invitational.
Becca Tschetter, the reigning Big Sky Golfer of the Week, bounced back from an 81 in the opening round to shoot 69 in the second round and 75 in the final 18 holes, finishing in a tie for ninth with a 9-over par 225.
Scarlet Weidig carded an 11-over par 227 (73-77-77) to tie for 15th in her final tournament of the fall, while Maddie Montoya joined her teammates in the top-20 with a 12-over par 228 (77-72-79) to tie for 18th.
"We had a good fall season and will be very excited to begin this spring," Basye said. "We need to get some injuries taken care of and review the fall now. They will work hard over the break and be ready come mid-January."
