Lauren Greny leads the Cats with a 71
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – Brittany Basye's message to her Montana State golf team entering the 2023 Big Sky Conference Championships on Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona, was simple.
"Believe," she said after her team posted a first-round 290, good for a second-place tie. "That's been a big word for us. Believe in yourself, and don't worry about what anyone else is doing."
That philosophy paid off for the Bobcats on Monday, as the team posted its second-lowest round of the season and fourth-lowest in history. By three strokes it was MSU's lowest Big Sky Tournament round. All four scoring members posted rounds between 71 (Lauren Greeny) and 75 (Jordan Briggs). In between, Scarlet Weidig Velasquez and Kameryn Basye each fired rounds of even-par 72. Maddie Montoya, a non-scorer on Monday, shot a 76.
Sacramento State leads after round one with 282, while Weber State and the Cats are tied. Defending champion Northern Arizona stands at 295.
"Obviously I'm super happy with them all playing well," Brittany Basye said. "That's the first goal, play well on day one. But there are two more days, it's three days. You get amped for the first day, and I'm happy with the first round. But there's a lot of work left."
Basye said last week that consistency in avoiding high scores on individual holes was an emphasis, and the team did that during Monday's opening round. "The good thing was if we did take a big number we didn't let us affect us. Jordan doubled, then she came back with an eagle. The big thing is that we started out hot, then wind down a little bit, but we finished strong."
Montana State played its best golf on par fives on Monday, averaging 4.45 strokes per hole. That was Monday's second-best rate. "We have the power," Brittany Basye said of her team's length off the tee. "When we take advantage of our power, and we're putting (well), we're golden."
The tournament resumes on Tuesday, with the Bobcats teeing off beginning at 9:30 am.
