Bobcat Golf Completes Day One of the GCU Invitational

The Bobcats are in ninth place — and second amongst Big Sky Competitors — out of 17 teams.
PHOENIX, Arizona — Wrapping up the first day of the Grand Canyon University Invitational, the Montana State women's golf team currently sits in ninth place after two rounds of golf at the par-72, 6,171-yard and the par-72, 6,100-yard GCU Golf Course on Monday.
The Bobcats started out strong, placing as high as fourth before wrapping up both rounds situated in ninth place out of 17 schools with a two-round score of 19-over 595 (296-299). With one round to play, the University of Louisiana Monroe currently leads all teams with a 9-under 567 (284-283), while NAU is the only other team under par in second with a 5-under 571 (288-283).
"We dropped a couple of spots with how we finished the second — these 36-hole days are not for the weak," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "They hung in it for most of them but started getting tired."
Individually, Scarlet Weidig Velazquez put together two solid rounds of golf — including four birdies in the first round and five in the second. The sophomore is in a three-way tie for third with a 4-under-140.
"Scarlet dropped some birdies and is playing smart," Basye said. "I'm excited to see how she handles tomorrow. She's been in this position before and she will be ready."
Freshman Maddie Montoya is tied for 31st place after a 4-over 148. She shot an even-par 72 in the first round that featured four birdies in the front nine and two on the back nine. Kameryn Basye is tied for 51st with a 7-over 151, while Jordan Briggs (T-71st, 12-over 156) and Lauren Greeny (T-76th, 14-over 158) round out the Bobcat lineup.
"Maddie had a great first round, Basye said. "Lauren Greeny and Jordan Briggs came back the second round with better rounds. Kameryn was steady and had good finishing holes, but just needed to drop putts. Overall, these ladies showed some grit and they are hungry to get back out there tomorrow and finish strong."
