Bobcat Golf Splits Pair of Matches on Day One of the Mountain Classic Match Play

The Bobcats took down fellow Big Sky Conference school Portland State in the quarterfinals before falling to 1-seed Nevada in the semifinals.
PALM DESERT, Calif. — Wrapping up the first day of the Mountain Classic Match Play, the Montana State women's golf team beat Portland State 3-2 before falling 4-0-1 to top-seeded Nevada in the semifinal round at The Classic Club on Monday.
The Bobcats will square off against 2-seed Boise State — who let a late lead against Northern Arizona slip away on the final three holes — in the third-place game at 8 a.m. MT tomorrow morning.
"We had a nice win this morning against Portland State and played decent against a top-ranked Nevada team," Montana State Head Coach Brittany Basye said. "All five players kept fighting. I saw some great golf for this being our first competition after winter break. These players have some grit, and I expect we will bring the same energy tomorrow."
The Bobcats started strong in the quarterfinal match against Portland State. Playing as MSU's No. 4, Maddie Montoya was even with PSU's Bayler Brundage for the first two holes before the true freshmen took a two-stroke lead over the next two holes. Montoya was up two at the turn, then took a four-stroke lead on the 10th hole, helping her defeat Brundage 4&3 on the 15th hole.
As the only Bobcat to score or tie in both matches, senior Kameryn Basye defeated Mariana Garcia Rosette 3&1 in the first round, then rallied to tie Nevada's Anitra Khoth by picking up pivotal wins on the 15th and 18th holes.
At the No. 2 spot, Lauren Greeny led Portland State's Tannica Porter for the first five holes, held her off by tying the next three holes, then extended her lead on the 12th hole. Porter would pull within a stroke on the 13th hole, but Greeny would outlast her competition for a 2&1 victory.
MSU's No. 1 Scarlet Weidig Velazquez fought valiantly in both rounds. She was the only Bobcat whose results came down to the 18th hole in both matches, yet she'd come up short both times.
