Bobcat Golf Returns to Action at the Mountain Classic Match Play

The Montana State women’s golf team kicks off its spring season in Palm Desert, Calif. this weekend.
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Competing in the Mountain Classic Match Play for the second-straight season, the Montana State women's golf team begins the spring season on Monday, Feb. 13.
Hosted by Boise State University and Nevada, the Mountain Classic Match Play will take place at the three-round match play tournament held at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The first two rounds take place on Monday, Feb. 13 with the first round set to start at 7 a.m. local time. Tuesday's lone round of action starts at 7 a.m.
All told, eight teams and six non-scoring individuals will be participating in the match play tournament: Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland State, Boise State, Nevada, Seattle, Southern Utah, and Wyoming. MSU's first-round draw will be announced on Sunday, yet the Bobcats crossed paths with every team except for Wyoming in the fall season.
The five Bobcats competing in the event will be Scarlett Weidig-Velazquez, Lauren Greeny, Kameryn Basye, Maddie Montoya and Jordan Briggs. This lineup looks to carry that taste of success the team had during the fall season, in which Weidig-Velazquez kicked off her collegiate career with back-to-back tournament wins to help MSU place second in the first two tournaments. Plus, MSU achieved this with its top five had three players making their collegiate debuts in the fall.
"Of the top five, all but two of our players hadn't played in a collegiate golf tournament prior to this fall," Assistant Coach Joey Lovell said. "I think the nervousness has worn off and the fear of playing poorly has worn off. Playing poorly comes with golf. But they've learned how to put in the best effort and not be fearful of how they play."
Additionally, the Bobcats will take advantage of a Big Sky-foe-heavy schedule. Both coaches know the Bobcats will cross paths with nearly every team in the conference prior to the Big Sky Conference Tournament, which will be invaluable as MSU chases its first team title since 1995.
"Everybody trusts each other and respects each other," Head coach Brittany Basye said. "The team dynamic feels different this year. This is the first time where we can see the all-time records and our goals in sight. And this group wants to go get it."
