“If we can clean up the boards and hit a few more shots we will leave a lot of games happy,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We need to find some consistency with our habits and that’s a mental challenge at this point.”
Montana State gave up a late 10-2 run to Washington midway through the fourth quarter and the Huskies held on for a 55-50 victory over the Bobcats on Tuesday night in Alaska Airlines Arena.
Montana State (3-5) stayed with Washington (9-0) throughout most of the game, trailing 44-42 with 8 minutes, 42 seconds left as senior Taylor Janssen hit a turnaround jumper off the glass. Over the next five minutes, the Huskies increased the margin to 54-44 as an Elle Ladine three-pointer gave Washington its largest lead of the contest at the 3:03 mark.
Washington went without a field goal in the final three minutes, but MSU connected on just one-of-eight down the stretch and got no closer than the final score as Marah Dykstra hit two free throws with 30-seconds remaining.
"If we can clean up the boards and hit a few more shots we will leave a lot of games happy," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We need to find some consistency with our habits and that's a mental challenge at this point."
Montana State, who cut its turnovers in half from its performance at Portland on Saturday night, forced the Huskies into 23 miscues and limited UW to four-of-19 from long distance. MSU shot 37.7% for the game, but also went cold from beyond the arc connecting on one-of 13 from three-point range.
Bobcat freshman Natalie Picton scored a team-high 10 points, while Katelynn Limardo added nine, and Dykstra, Janssen and Issy Bunyan chipped in eight apiece. Bunyan paced MSU under the boards with five rebounds.
"We continue to chip away at limiting our mistakes," Binford said. "We need to focus on the boards and taking care of the ball."
