Montana State's post tandem of Lexi Deden and Marah Dykstra each recorded double-doubles to guide the Bobcats to a 70-39 win over Lewis-Clark State on Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena in exhibition action.
Deden, a senior from Missoula, scored a game-high 22 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Dykstra, a sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., added 13 points and ten rebounds.
"I thought Lexi and Marah had great chemistry," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford, who enters her 19th season at helm of the Bobcat program. "Marah's ability to get to the foul line was huge for us as that was an area, we graduated a lot from. So that was exciting to see. Lexi was really aggressive in the interior."
The Bobcats used a 13-2 run at the midway mark of the second quarter, taking a 28-16 lead following a Deden layin. MSU held a 30-21 advantage at intermission.
MSU opened the second half with a 13-4 run as freshman Natalie Picton's three-pointer gave the Bobcats a 43-25 cushion at the 2:38 mark of the third quarter. Montana State owned the fourth frame, shooting 61.1% from the field to cruise to the win.
The Bobcats held the Warriors to 25.4% from the field, including a four-of-29 effort from beyond the arc. LC State notched 30 wins last season, averaging 74.2 points per game. The Warriors returned three starters from last season's squad.
"LC State was a great opponent to show a lot of things for us," Binford said. "They are a very successful program that averaged around 75 points per game, last year, and we were able to keep them under check and under 14 points a quarter- which was a goal.
"Our defense has a lot of potential," Binford added. "I think we can get our hands cleaned up on the bonus stuff and put an emphasis on communication. But overall, I was really impressed with our defense."
Deden, who finished the game connecting on ten-of-16 from the field, had 14 points and 11 rebounds at halftime. Also contributing to the Bobcat offense was Dylan Philip with eight points and five assists. Senior Katelynn Limardo chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.
Montana State plays an exhibition game against Carroll College in Helena on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., as the Saints celebrate 50 years of women's basketball.
