Four athletes will compete in Albuquerque, N.M. at the site of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State track and field team will send four athletes to compete at the UNM Open, hosted by the University of New Mexico and held at the Albuquerque Convention Center this Friday and Saturday.
Friday's action begins at 3 p.m. MT, whereas Saturday's events will start at 10 a.m. MT. The meet will be live streamed, albeit behind a paywall, on FloTrack. Links to the live stream and live results can be found on the men's and women's track team's schedule pages on msubobcats.com.
Senior hurdler Elena Carter, senior high jumper Lucy Corbett, sophomore thrower Matt Furdyk and reigning Big Sky Men's Field Athlete of the Week Colby Wilson are all scheduled to make the trip to the Albuquerque Convention Center, which is the site of the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. All four athletes currently rank in the top two in the Big Sky in their respective events; with over 20 schools in attendance at the UNM Open, this weekend is a prime opportunity for the Bobcats to improve on their marks.
Both Carter and Corbett will lead off the action in the long jump and the high jump, respectively, starting at 3 p.m. on Friday. Carter leads the Big Sky with her mark of 5.87m (19-3.25); whereas Corbett is one of 14 Division I women to clear six feet in the high jump. Corbett's mark of 1.85m (6-0.75) from the Bobcat PReview meet is tied for the fifth-best in the nation.
Later on Friday, Furdyk will compete in the men's weight throw at 5 p.m. MT. The sophomore got off to a solid start to the season at the Bobcat PReview meet, throwing a personal-best mark of 19.69m (64-7.25) that ranks fourth all-time at MSU. Furdyk has gone a perfect 3-for-3 in weight throw wins this season and ranks second in the Big Sky behind Northern Arizona thrower John Murphy's mark of 20.13m (66-0.5).
As the only Bobcat to double at the UNM Open, Carter is scheduled to race the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. MT. Carter broke her own school record twice at the Cougar Challenge two weeks ago; her time of 8.38 seconds is just outside the top 50 in Division I, yet it's the top time in the Big Sky. Should Carter advance to the finals, she would compete one more time at 12:55 p.m. MT.
Wrapping up the action for the Bobcats, junior Colby Wilson and 15 pole vaulters will compete in the A section of the men's pole vault, starting at 12:30 p.m. Wilson earned Big Sky Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honors for posting the best mark in the Big Sky by clearing 5.30m (17-4.5) to win the Bobcat Challenge. Wilson ranks 26th in Division I so far, yet he'll be pushed in a competitive flight led by Stephen F. Austin's Ellis Branson, who is one of nine Division I men to clear 18 feet this season.
As a team, the Bobcats are coming off their biggest home meet of the year — the Bobcat Challenge — in which 11 individuals and both 4x400-meter relays emerged victorious. Up next for the group is the WSU Multis and Combined Events, held at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. on Feb. 2-4.
All meet information and updates can be found on the men's and women's track and field schedule pages on msubobcats.com.
