Montana State Track and Field Season Resumes in Spokane
1/11/2023 11:26:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Bobcats will compete against several Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference schools in Spokane on Friday.
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Coming off a break for the holidays, the Montana State indoor track and field team will resume its season this Friday, as the Bobcats head to Spokane, Wash. for the Cougar Classic.
Friday's meet — which will be the first of two trips MSU will take to The Podium, located in Spokane, Wash. — will begin at 9 a.m. PT with the men's high jump. The women's 60-meter hurdles start the track action at 11 a.m. PT. The meet will be livestreamed, albeit behind a paywall, on RunnerSpace; livestream and live stat links will be provided on the MSU track and field team's schedule pages on msubobcats.com.
The Cougar Classic will give Montana State a look at several schools outside of the Big Sky: Washington State, Oregon, USC, Fresno State, UNLV will be in attendance. Idaho is the lone Big Sky Conference opponent scheduled to compete, but the Vandals will give MSU's newcomers a good first look at conference competition.
"The Podium has really added a lot to our schedule," Dale Kennedy Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lyle Weese said. "It will be really nice to be on a track where there are no adjustments for altitude or track size, so I think that will benefit us."
Montana State will bring a strong contingent of sprinters, throwers, jumpers and vaulters to the Cougar Classic, in hopes of giving as many athletes opportunities to compete as possible.
The sprint team will bring its full squad, which is mostly made up of promising freshmen and underclassmen. Notable entries on the sprints side include 60-meter hurdles school record holder Elena Carter, who is seeded fifth in her marquee indoor event. Fellow sprinter Macy White is slated to double in the 60- and the 200-meter dashes, the latter of which will be stacked with competitors from Oregon and USC.
For the men's side, Stryder Todd-Fields leads a group of seven Bobcats in the 60-meters, while fellow freshman Noah Barbery is the top-seeded MSU runner in the 200 meters. In the 400 meters, Will Anderson is seeded fifth behind four USC sprinters, while Julian Hazen and freshman Michael Swan round out MSU's entries in the event.
Out on the runway, Ian Fosdick and Twila Reovan look to improve on their solid starts to the indoor season, as both set new top-10 indoor marks in the triple jump at the Bobcat PReview meet last month. Fosdick's will double in the long and the triple jump, while Reovan's mark of 12.15m (5th all-time at MSU) is seeded third.
Reigning Big Sky Women's Field Athlete of the Week Lucy Corbett comes into the high jump as one of four Division I women to clear six feet this season. The senior from Bozeman High School is seeded atop the 21 athletes listed to compete in the event.
Montana State is responsible for four of the six entries in the women's pole vault. Maisee Brown has the best mark in the event after clearing 3.97m (13-0.25) to win the Bobcat PReview meet last month. Brown ranks 21st in Division I in the event; she'll be joined by Taylor Holmes, Libby Hansen and Avery Allen in the event.
For the men, Colby Wilson comes in as the top seed and will take another shot at breaking his indoor school record. Wilson has a history of competing well at The Podium. Last year at the Washington State Invitational, Wilson set the then-facility record by clearing 17-4.25 (5.29m), which was the second-best mark in school history at the time. He would go on to break the school record at the Big Sky Preview six days later.
Over in the circle, the Bobcats have the top four marks in the men's weight throw. Matt Furdyk is coming off a massive personal best in the weight throw; his mark of 19.69m (64-7.25 feet) from the Bobcat PReview meet was nearly a two-meter improvement from last season. As for the women's weight throw, Leah Klein is seeded fifth in the event after also throwing a personal best of 17.93m (58-10) last month.
The men's shot put will be a sea of blue and gold, as Carter Slade and four of his teammates make up half of the 10-person field. Jordan Fink is the top-seeded Bobcat in the women's shot put with her mark of 14.43m; she'll be joined by Klein, Sydney Mattfeldt and Jenavieve Lynch.
Distance-wise, the Bobcats will not be sending its whole team, yet Riley Collins will get another shot at the 800 meters with Chris Bianchini and Noah Majerus, both of whom are making their season debuts.
Earlier this month, both teams were picked to finish third in the Big Sky Indoor Coaches' Poll. Last year, the men's team finished third and the women's team finished second at the conference indoor meet, which took place in Worthington Arena. The Bobcats were previously scheduled to compete at the Cougar Classic and the 2023 Spokane Indoor Classic, yet the team will no longer attend the Spokane Indoor Classic.
The first Montana State home meet of 2023 will be the Bobcat Challenge, which takes place on Jan. 20-21. All schedule information and updates can be found on the men's and women's track and field schedule pages on msubobcats.com.
