Montana State continued its strong fall at the MSU Northern Rodeo
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State cowboys and cowgirls combined for six event wins and both team titles in dominating the MSU Northern Rodeo in Havre September 23-24.
Freshmen continue to impact the Bobcats, particularly on the men's side. Kaden Conway winning the men's all-around (finishing fourth in the steer wrestling and team roping header) and Jaden Whitman won steer wrestling. Senior Caleb Meeks extended his fall success, winning the saddle bronc riding, while his classmate Nate Dearhammer returned from injury to finish second in bareback. Jase Bustad earned MSU's other men's win, capturing tie-down roping honors.
Bobcat coach Kyle Whitaker was pleased with Meeks, who leads the Big Sky region in saddle bronc riding through four events. "We've done really good in saddle bronc," he said. "Caleb Meeks is dominating the region so far and Cody (Faulkner) and Leif Meidell have also been good."
Dearhammer's presence in the lineup adds depth to MSU's rough stock events. "Nate has been hurt but he rode last weekend and finished second," Whitaker said. "He looked good. It's great to have him back."
While the Bobcat men dominated the men's standings, the women won a narrow decision over UM Western (380 points to 320). Individual highlights, though, were aplenty. Four Bobcats finished in the top six in breakaway roping, with Isabella Fossum winning, while five of the top nine in goat tying wore blue and gold.
"Our depth is really good," Whitaker said, including the men in the conversation. "We have a lot of freshmen doing well, including some walk-ons, so getting the right people in the point scoring lineup can be tricky. It's a problem that not every team has so it's a good problem."
The Big Sky Region's fall season concludes this weekend in Dillon at the UM Western Rodeo on September 30-October 1. Whitaker said the sprint through September "has only been a month, but it seems like a long time. It's been busy, but we want to finish it out strong."
