After winning the Eagle Invitational on Wednesday, Montana State redshirt sophomore Scarlet Weidig Velazquez was named the Big Sky Women’s Golfer of the Week.
FARMINGTON, Utah — For the second consecutive week, Montana State women's golfer Scarlet Weidig Velazquez earned the Big Sky Conference's Women's Golfer of the Week award, as announced by the Big Sky office on Thursday.
This week's award comes on the heels of Weidig Velazquez's win at Eastern Washington's Eagle Invitational on Sept. 28. She was the driving force behind not only the Bobcats' third-best round in school history (291 in round two), but also the best tournament score in program history, helping MSU card an 883 (294-291-298) at the par-72, 6,000-yard Indian Canyon Golf Course.
At the Eagle Invitational this week, Weidig Velazquez led over the first two days, carding a team-high 16 birdies throughout the three rounds. However, bogeys on the front nine on the final day made her play catch-up with the rest of the field. She delivered with three birdies in the final five holes, giving her a 1-under 215 (70-71-74) and a one-stroke win over Portland State's Tay Seth.
Through her first two weeks as a Bobcat, the redshirt sophomore from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica is already in rare company. Weidig Velazquez is one of four Bobcats to win multiple tournaments, and one of six to earn multiple weekly conference awards. She was named the Co-Big Sky Women's Golfer of the Week on Sept. 21 after winning the Kelsey Chugg Invitational.
Weidig Velazquez and the Bobcats are back in action next week for Seattle University's Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, which takes place at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club on Oct. 3-4.
