SPOKANE, Washington — After the first day of action at the Eagle Invitational, the Montana State women's golf team sits in second place out of nine teams at Eastern Washington's home tournament at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, Wash.
The Bobcats are three strokes behind Weber State with a 294 at the par-72, 6,000-yard course. Host team Eastern Washington is two strokes back with a 296, and Cal State Bakersfield rounds out the top half of the nine-team field with a 296 after day one. There are two rounds to go in the Eagle Invitational, which continues with the second round tomorrow at 11 a.m. MT and before wrapping up with the final round on Wednesday at 9 a.m. MT.
"We held our own today with everyone shooting in the 70s," Head coach Brittany Basye said. "But we need to make more putts and stay away from the double bogeys."
Scarlet Weidig Velazquez is in a three-way tie atop the field so far, shooting a 2-under-70. The redshirt sophomore birdied twice on the front nine, then three times on the back nine — including twice in the last three holes.
Freshman Lauren Greeny, is in fifth place with an even-par 72 with three birdies on the day. Kameryn Basye is third for Montana State and tied for 11th overall with a 2-over-74, plus Maddie Montoya rounds out the Bobcat scorers with a 78 that is currently tied for 34th overall.
Playing as an individual, Jordan Briggs started strong by carding birdies on the first two holes, then carded four birdies on the back nine to finish tied for 16th with a 3-over-75 in the first round. Briggs leads the team with six birdies after the first round.
"I'm looking forward to seeing how they bring it tomorrow and how creative we can be," Basye said.
