Bobcat Women Capture DCC Rodeo Top Honors While Men Finish Second

Men finish second in close competition
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State's women continued its domination of the Big Sky Region over the weekend, winning the team title by a wide margin while capturing individual championships in each event at the Dawson Community College Rodeo in Glendive.
MSU's women nearly swept the goat tying. Paige Rasmussen won the event, and was joined by Jessica Stevens (second), Cassidy Bolich (fourth), Jacee Currin (fifth), Haven Wolstein (sixth) and Elizabeth Bolich (seventh) to take six of the eight spots. Michelle Williams (barrel racing) and Cate Hepper (breakaway roping) also won individual events. The Cats scored 425.00 points in the women's team standings, outdistancing second place MSU Northern's 170.00 points.
Molly Salmond led the way for the Bobcats. The senior won the women's all-around while finishing third in the breakaway roping and fifth in barrel racing. She also captured top honors in team roping among heelers.
"Our women did an outstanding job," said Bobcat coach Kyle Whitaker. "We won every event and had some good performances. Molly Salmond had a phenomenal rodeo."
UM Western captured a tight men's competition, scoring 660.00 points to Montana State's 540.00, although Whitaker said MSU's individual performances didn't directly align with the team standings. "We had a lot of men that weren't on the points team who really performed well. Mike Nannini had a (hand injury) and didn't practice all week so I didn't put him on the points team, and he went out and won the tie down roping."
Caleb Meeks captured saddle bronc individual honors, and Whitaker said the senior continues to evolve. "Caleb is really coming on. He made the College Finals (last summer) but I feel like his riding improved over the summer and even this fall. He was having trouble with his mark-out, but he's really gotten that down."
After two weekends competing outdoors the Cats take their talents inside to a smaller arena in Havre this weekend, competing in the MSU Northern Rodeo. "We're in a smaller indoor arena this weekend," Whitaker said, "that will be an adjustment. It'll be interesting to see how that affect them."
The event runs September 23-24.
