Greeny, Weidig-Velazquez Tied for First on Day One of the Kelsey Chugg Invitational

Lauren Greeny shot a 67 in the first round to tie the lowest 18-round score in Montana State program history, plus the Bobcats sit nine strokes behind Creighton for the team title at the Kelsey Chugg Invitational.
EDEN, Utah — Bolstered by Lauren Greeny's school-record-tying first round and Scarlet Weidig Velazquez's big second round, the Montana State women's golf team is in second place through the first 36 holes, plus has two golfers tied for first place after day one of the Kelsey Chugg Invitational at Wolf Creek Golf Club on Monday.
The Bobcats shot an opening 601 through 36 holes at the par-72 Wolf Creek Golf Club. The tournament features 10 teams including Montana State, plus four fellow Big Sky competitors in Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana and the host team Weber State. MSU is second behind Creighton, which shot 592 through two rounds of play, yet both Greeny and Weidig Velazquez are tied for first with 145s through two rounds.
In the first round of action, Greeny — who made her collegiate debut on Monday — shot five-under par with 67 strokes, which tied the school record for the lowest score in an 18-hole round. Greeny carded birdies on her first two holes before an eagle on a 370-yard par-five brought her under par for good. She ended five strokes under par in the first round to take a commanding four-stroke lead over the next closest competitors.
"That was a great first round by Lauren Greeny," Head coach Brittany Basye said. "I saw her first three holes and knew it was going to be a good round for her. I'm excited for her and anxious to see how tomorrow goes for her."
Yet the Bobcats had not one, but two notable individual debuts on Monday.
Kansas transfer Scarlet Weidig Velazquez made a big move in the second round by carding three birdies before the turn. The redshirt sophomore would finish with round scores of 74 and 71, respectively, to tie her teammate for first place.
"Scarlet played some great golf as well by shooting one-under-par in the second round," Basye said. "She had some good looks today and I'm also anxious to see how she competes tomorrow."
As a team, the Bobcats shot a 295 in the first round to take first place. Creighton made a move in round two to take the lead, yet MSU remains in striking distance with the leaders. Cora Rosanova is tied for 29th with a 155 through two rounds, Kameryn Basye rounds out the Bobcat scorers with a 160 through two rounds, then Maddie Montoya and Jordan Briggs are tied for 55th with 163 strokes through two rounds to finish off MSU's individual scores.
"Overall we played decent," Basye said. "It takes four scores for a team win, so we will be looking to get great rounds tomorrow and finish this tournament out strong with all six players. I'm excited to see how all of our players finish out here at Wolf Creek."
