The Montana State men’s basketball program added a guard with Division I and Big Sky Conference experience to its 2022-23 roster as Robert Ford III has signed a financial aid agreement to join the Bobcats
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State men's basketball program added a guard with Division I and Big Sky Conference experience to its 2022-23 roster as Robert Ford III has signed a financial aid agreement to join the Bobcats.
Robert Ford III spent the last two years at Idaho State after spending the first two seasons of his college career at Clackamas Community College. During the 2020-21 season, Ford played and started in all 24 games for the Bengals. He averaged 31.5 minutes a game, shot 41.1% from the field and 36% from the three-point line. He averaged 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds en route to earning honorable mention all-conference honors. Ford had a season-high 26 points and 16 rebounds versus SAGU American Indian College that season on Dec. 18.
Ford's 2021-22 season was cut short after nine games due to injury. Prior to his injury, he was averaging 10.9 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting over 46%, including a 40% clip from deep. Ford had scored in double digits in six of the contests.
Ford arrived to Pocatello after a standout tenure at Clackamas. The Portland native was the Northwest Athletic Conference MVP, Southern Region MVP and Southern Region Defensive Player of the Year in his second season for the Cougars. That year, Ford averaged 23.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 2.9 steals per game. Ford registered seven triple doubles for Clackmas during the 2019-20 campaign. His first year at Clackamas also produced big numbers as Ford averaged 18.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game.
"We recruited Robert out of junior college really hard," Montana State head coach Danny Sprinkle said. "I've always loved his game. Defensively he's just a pest. He's one of the better defensive guards in our league, if not the best. I think he brings a dimension of playmaking and he can also score the basketball. He's one of those guys you hate to play or scout against.
"Robert obviously was an all-conference player two years ago and this past year he got hurt. He comes in being able to affect multiple parts of the game that not a lot of kids at this level can do. Two seasons ago, he averaged more rebounds than anybody on our team has the last three years. He can make a big impact for us here and help us play faster. He is a tremendous addition to our team and fits in with our guys because he just wants to win."
Montana State wrapped up a 27-8 overall record in 2021-22 with a loss to No. 3 Texas Tech in the West Region First Round of the NCAA Tournament on March 18. MSU's trip to the NCAA Tournament was just its fourth ever appearance and first in 26 years.
