BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State begins a stretch of four games in eight days on Saturday by taking on league-leading Weber State in the Dee Events Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. as the Bobcats and Wildcats enter the matchup as two of the top three teams in the Big Sky Conference standings. MSU follows the game at Weber State by traveling to Idaho State to face the Bengals in Pocatello at 6 p.m. on Monday
The Bobcats won their seventh consecutive contest, and picked up their 12th win in 13 games, when they defeated Idaho (70-64) in Worthington Arena on Jan. 29. MSU's seven straight victories matches its streak from a season ago, which was ended by Weber State in Ogden, and is the program's longest since 2002. The seven wins encapsulated January making it back-to-back years the Bobcats went 7-0 during the entire month. MSU has had nine undefeated months of play over the past 90 years with two of those months coming in consecutive seasons.
MSU is currently 16-5 overall this season. That mark through 21 games is MSU's best since the 1997-98 season when that group began the year 17-4 before finishing 19-11. The Bobcats' 8-2 start in Big Sky play is also one of their best this century. MSU opened both the 2001-02 and 2004-05 ledgers at 8-2 in conference play, with the 2001-02 team winning the regular season Big Sky title by finishing 12-2 in the league.
Montana State is 8-1 at home this season with its lone loss coming at the hands of the Wildcats on Dec. 30. MSU held a 65-64 edge with seven minutes left, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Dyson Koehler gave Weber State the lead for good. MSU had the deficit down to three with a minute remaining, however a Dillon Jones field goal and six Wildcat free throws down the stretch propelled WSU to an 85-75 win in Bozeman.
The Bobcats head into Saturday's matchup going into a building that hasn't seen MSU squads have much recent success. MSU completed a season sweep of Weber State during Danny Sprinkle's first year guiding the program in 2019-20. MSU's 62-61 win at the Dee Events Center that season featured an Amin Adamu go-ahead layup with 3.2 seconds remaining after trailing by 13 in the second half. That win ended an 11-game win streak for WSU over MSU and was the Bobcats' first victory in Ogden since the 2009 Big Sky Tournament. MSU is just 9-54 all-time versus WSU in Ogden.
MSU makes its way back on to the road with a positive winning percentage in true away contests with a 6-4 record. The Bobcats have won five straight road games, a span that is the longest for the program during its Division I era.
Several Bobcats have hit career achievements this season. Xavier Bishop's 1,633 points among the top 100 active players in the nation. His 479 assists are among the top 60 in Division I men's basketball. Jubrile Belo crossed over 1,000 points in his college career in MSU's last outing versus Idaho. He became the 39th member of the Bobcats' 1,000-point club while the Bobcat big man has 103 blocks, just three away from taking over the third spot in the program record book.
MSU is currently ranked 134th in the NCAA's Net Rankings. The ranking is the highest for MSU since 2002 and is among the best for the Bobcats ever, trailing their RPI at the end of the 1987 (63rd), 1996 (72nd) and 2002 (97th) seasons.
Montana State's games versus Weber State and Idaho State will be streamed on ESPN+. The game will also be broadcast on the Bobcat Radio Network on KMMS 1450 AM as well as on the Varsity Network app. Links for live streams, live stats and radio coverage are available on the men's basketball schedule page on msubobcats.com.
