Montana State used a strong defensive effort coupled with solid shooting from the perimeter to notch its first road victory of the season with a 69-60 decision over BYU on Saturday afternoon in the Marriott Center, snapping the Cougars' 30-game home court win streak.
Montana State (2-0) used a 9-0 run to open the second half and never relinquished its leads holding off a late BYU (0-2) third quarter rally with timely shooting.
"I thought the kids did an excellent job executing the game plan," said MSU 18th-year head coach Tricia Binford. "We did a good job keeping them out of the post, and on the other end, I really liked how our guard play attacked and penetrated."
Leading by as much as nine-points midway through the third frame, the Cougars cut the margin to 48-46 with 2:46 left in the quarter. MSU responded with a 7-0 run sparked by Taylor Janssen and Leia Beattie three-pointers to push the Bobcats' lead to 55-48 heading into the final 10-minutes.
"We did a tremendous job with our composure and embracing the hard," Binford said. "Being on the road and responding to their run started with our defense and ability to manage the glass."
MSU built its largest lead of the contest as Grace Beasley converted two free throws with 3:33 left, giving the Bobcats a 64-53 cushion as the Bobcats cruised to its first win at BYU since Dec. 30, 2010.
Darian White paced the Bobcats with a team-high 16 points going 5-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. Also in double-digits were Beasley 13 and Madison Jackson 11.
Beasely scored seven of her points in the first quarter to kickstart the Bobcat offense. Jackson posted seven first half points, as well. BYU held a 33-32 lead at intermission.
"Grace and Maddy (Jackson) really got us settled in the first half," Binford said. "Our depth allowed us to keep legs fresh and really pressure the ball."
For the game, MSU shot 37.9% from the field, including 7-of-14 from long distance. The Bobcats forced 17 BYU turnovers, while committing just five miscues of its own. MSU held a 7-1 advantage in points scored off turnovers.
The Cougars shot 44.2% from the field but were just 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. BYU held a slim 34-33 edge in rebounding. White paced the Bobcats under the boards with eight rebounds.
"One of the areas we addressed this week was managing the boards," Binford said. "I'm pleased with our effort. We certainly have things to work on and clean-up, but this a solid road win over a very good program."
BYU was led by Lauren Gustin with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
