BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State's track and field program is slated to have student-athletes participating on each day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round as the competition begins at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium on Wednesday. The meet, which runs from May 26-29, serves as the qualifier to the NCAA Championships which are set to take place in Eugene, Ore., from June 9-12.
Representing the Bobcats at the preliminaries in College Station will be Collin Buck, Lucy Corbett, Cantor Coverdell, Duncan Hamilton, Cooper Hoffman, Noah Martin, Alec Nehring, Carla Nicosia, Derrick Olsen, Ethan Saberhagen, Drake Schneider, Levi Taylor and Carley VonHeeder.
Coverdell and Hoffman will open the action at 12:30 p.m. MDT Wednesday, May 26, in the men's javelin with both appearing in the second flight. All throws events, along with the long jump and triple jump that will be contested at the preliminaries, will allow for each competitor to have three attempts regardless of their flight. The top 12 overall finishers advance to the NCAA meet at Hayward Field.
Nehring will be part of the first flight of the men's shot put that starts at 5 p.m.
The men's 110 hurdle First Round races begin at that same time with MSU's Olsen running in heat six. The men's 400 hurdle First Round heats begin at 7:20 p.m. with Schneider participating in the third race. Olsen and Schneider will need to finish in the top three of their respective heats – or complete one of the next six best times – to advance to the quarterfinals that would take place on Friday. They would advance to Eugene from there if they earn a top-three showing in one of the three quarterfinals races or by clocking one of the next three best times.
Buck, a senior distance runner for the Bobcats, will be part of a 48-runner field in the 10,000 at 8:10 p.m. He will be looking to finish in the top 12 to advance.
VonHeeder makes the women's team's first appearance on Thursday when she competes in the third flight of the javelin competition at 12:30 p.m. VonHeeder, who has previously placed as high as 25th overall in her previous three trips to the regional meet, will look to complete a top-12 throw in her three attempts.
MSU's Martin opens Friday's events with a showing in the men's high jump. He'll be competing in the second of two flights with the opening 24 athletes getting things started at 12 p.m. Martin will need to clear a top-12 height of 48 competitors to qualify for action in Eugene. Saberhagen makes his first regional appearance by throwing in the second flight of the discus competion that begins at 12:30 p.m.
Both Taylor and Hamilton will be running in 16-runner heats of the men's 3,000 steeplechase at 5:10 p.m. Taylor will appear in the first heat while Hamilton will participate in the third. The steeplechase races serve as semifinals similar to the 10,000. The top three finishers in each heat, along with the next three fastest recorded times, advance to the NCAA Championships.
Action concludes on Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Corbett will be part of the second flight of the women's high jump which opens at 12 p.m. Nicosia is slated to be a member of the first flight of the women's triple jump that begins at 12:30 p.m.
