In the past week, Montana State Athletics' Student-Athlete Wellness Department released a comprehensive wellness toolkit available for athletes and athletic staff on the Bobcats' athletic website.
The goal of the toolkit is to promote optimal athletic and academic performance among student-athletes and to foster a positive mental health culture at MSU. The Wellness page includes information and resources for athletes under the topics of mental health, achieving optimal athletic performance, academic skill development, eating & nutrition, and diversity, equity, & inclusion.
The toolkit provides a list of available wellness resources and evidence-based information on health habits, self-help strategies, goal writing, sleep hygiene, stress management, how to prepare for competitions, how to cope with injuries, and more. The Wellness page includes an athletic staff toolkit as well, which provides information for coaches about how to support athlete wellness and performance through a mental health lens.
The Wellness page was developed in the spring semester of 2021 as part of a University of Mary Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone project by Quinn DeStefano, a former athlete at the University of Wyoming. The project was overseen by Aaron Grusonik, MA, Psy.D., the director of the MSU Student-Athlete Wellness Department.
