The Montana State women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with a 6-1 decision over Seattle U on Saturday afternoon in the Bobcat Anderson Tennis Center.
Montana State grabbed the opening doubles point as its Nos. 2 and 3 tandems each won by 6-1 outcomes. MSU's top duo of Laura Mary and Linnea Fristam dropped a hard fought 7-6 contest falling in a 13-11 tiebreaker.
"Our doubles teams of Caitlin Ward and Daphne Haverkamp and Mirte Van Baelen and JJ Chen came out ready to play and handled their matches very well," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "We need to get our doubles teams in order and find the right pairings. Today was a good start to begin firming up our teams."
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead as Fristam cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kyra Jung. After dropping a point at No. 4 singles, MSU clinched the match with victories at Nos. 1 and 3 on the ladder. The Cats closed out the contest winning at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Singles was sparked by the return of Evi Buijsen, who had been sidelined with injuries.
"Linnea Fristam led out the team by taking immediate control of her match," Reeves said. "She played very well this weekend. Laura Mary and Mirte Van Baelen both had tricky matches that they mentally had to wrap their heads around. Once Laura became comfortable and settled in, she applied the pressure and took control of her match. Mirte finished off her match with a convincing third set to earn her first ever win to clinch a Bobcat victory.
"The day was also highlighted with Evi's return," Reeves added. "She returned to singles play, after a year and a half recovery from two hip surgeries, winning in three at the No. 6 spot. I could not be happier for her after all she has been through to try to return to play."
Montana State will travel to Boise State next Saturday.
"I was proud of the team for their fight and focus today," Reeves said. "We have been preaching to believe in the work they are doing. And it will lead us to our team goals.
