MSU Treks to Pocatello For Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championships
2/26/2020 12:45:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Bobcat track and field teams return to Holt Arena to begin the conference meet Thursday
The Montana State track and field program makes its second trip to Pocatello, Idaho, during the indoor season with its return visit its biggest of the slate. The Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships begin inside Holt Arena on the Idaho State campus on Thursday, Feb. 27.
"We have gotten better overall each week which is exciting," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of track and field. "We have been building and getting stronger, so I think we're set up to have our best weekend of competition."
The meet opens Thursday with the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon. The men's heptathlon wraps up Friday, with individual events starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday marks the final day of competition with events kicking off at 10 a.m.
"Going into our conference championships is a focus for our program each season," Weese said. "Our team is very excited about it and can't wait to get going.
"We've already been there," Weese said of Holt Arena, "so we should have some familiarity with it. Some of our seniors have already competed at a conference championship at that facility before. There are some things that are unique about it, but we've been there so we should be prepared, and we're excited to go."
The Bobcats had a strong outing in their appearance at the Stacy Dragila Invitational on Jan. 17 hosted by Idaho State. MSU's sprints group stood out in the meet, with several individuals advancing to finals races. Weese noted the experience for MSU's runners on the track should benefit them due to the unique set up.
"For all running events, it's a plywood surface so the first time you compete on it you tend to be tentative until you're familiar with it," Weese said. "It does make a big difference, maybe more so at this track than any other facility we go to."
Montana State hosted four full team meets during its indoor schedule. The Bobcat men head into the conference championships with a combined 43 marks or times in the top 20 of the conference performance list. The MSU women's squad has 35.
The Northern Arizona men's team has 51 marks or times on the conference's performance list and will be favored to win the Big Sky title. The Lumberjacks are the No. 1 ranked team in the USTFCCCA's latest National Track & Field Rating Index. NAU is the highest ranked men's team in regional rankings, while Idaho State is ranked eighth in the Mountain Region ahead of Montana State which is listed 11th. The USTFCCCA's Conference Index ranks those three teams in order followed by Eastern Washington.
The women's competition figures to be a close competition. NAU's women's team has 43 top-20 marks on the Big Sky performance list sitting ahead of Weber State (42), MSU (35), Eastern Washington (35) and Idaho State (35).
The Big Sky Conference Index features NAU in the top spot on the women's side, followed by reigning champion Sacramento State, Eastern Washington, MSU and Idaho State.
