Montana State is back on the course this weekend playing in familiar territory when the Bobcats tee off in Phoenix Saturday
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State golf team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when the Bobcats tee off at the GCU Invitational. Action begins at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course on Saturday with 36 holes starting at 8 a.m. and the final round of 18 holes takes place Sunday starting at 8 a.m.
"We're very excited to start competing this weekend," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We have been inside practicing for almost two months now. We are ready to be outside hitting off green grass and putting on real greens.
"This is a good tournament, great golf course and great field. The three seniors have played this course multiple times while Lucia and Sofia will be playing it for the first time. Our focus will be on course management. We want to get our feel back with our short games being that we'll be outside."
MSU's appearance at the GCU-hosted tournament has become an annual pilgrimage to the course in Phoenix. The Bobcats will compete in the meet for the seventh consecutive time. MSU's highlight from the meet came during their 2017-18 season visit when then sophomore Kelly Hooper won the individual title in playoff holes. She shot a 3-over-par 219 over 54 holes and picked up MSU's first medalist honors in five seasons at the event.
Hooper leads the Bobcats this season through three events that counted towards the squad's team and individual scores.
The MSU senior has a 74.22 strokes per round scoring average heading into the spring portion of the Bobcats' 2019-20 schedule. Hooper placed second in the Battle at Old Works in Anaconda, Mont., and also tied for eighth at the Rose City Collegiate.
Representing the Bobcats in this weekend's GCU Invitational will be Hooper, Delaney Elliott, Lucia Prieto Romano, Sofia Rodriguez Todd and Coral Schulz.
Elliott (76.78) and Prieto Romano (78.50) have MSU's second and third best scoring averages, respectively, this season. Elliott has one top-10 finish this season while her best showing at the GCU Invite came during her freshman season in 2017 when she shot a 13-over 229 to tie for 18th overall. Prieto Romano fired a 229 and tied for 20th to open the season at the Battle at Old Works – her best individual showing of her career – and won a match at the Griz Match Play Challenge to close out the fall slate.
Rodriguez Todd and Schulz round out MSU's lineup. Rodriguez Todd has a 79.17 scoring average through two tournaments this season. Schulz has a 79.33 mark this year and her top showing at the GCU Invite came a season ago as a junior when she shot a 241.
The GCU Invitational field consists of 14 teams while the course layout will play to just under 6,100 yards. Live results for the tournament can be found on golfstat.com.
