BOBCATS AND WILDCATS, OH MY!: The Montana State women's basketball squad will continue its trek down I-15 closing out its current road swing at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Dee Events Center. Montana State is coming off a 74-55 victory over Idaho State on Thursday night in Pocatello, while Weber State dropped a 78-46 decision to Montana. With its win over ISU, MSU's current winning streak stands at eight games.
SERIES NOTE: MSU holds a commanding 53-32 advantage in its all-time series with the Wildcats going back to the 1977-78 season. Montana State has won the last three meetings between the two Big Sky rivals and an impressive 24 of the last 25 games, as well. MSU's last loss to Weber State came on March 2, 2018 as the Wildcats defeated the Bobcats 85-69 in Ogden. Prior to that loss, Montana State had won nine consecutive games in the Dee Events Center.
CAT OF THE WEEK: Tori Martell led MSU last week averaging 12.5 points per game, while shooting 53.5% from the field and 63.6% from long distance. The Somerset, Wis., product led MSU at Idaho State with a team best 13 points.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS: MSU has done a solid job on the defensive end this season. The Bobcats lead the Big Sky in rebounding (44.2 rpg), rebound margin (+9.6 rpg), field-goal percentage defense (36.2%), rebounds defensive (34.5) and steals (10.5 spg). *As a team, the Bobcats have recorded six games with 50 or more rebounds this season, including a high of 59 boards in its win at Sacramento State on Dec. 28.
*The 2019-20 Bobcats are giving up 60.1 points per game, making it one of the stingiest defenses in school history. The mark currently ranks second all-time at MSU. The 1986-87 Bobcats hold the all-time mark for fewest points allowed per game at 59.4.
MORE ON THE WILDCATS: Weber State dropped a 78-46 decision to Montana on Thursday night in the Dee Events Center. Weber State started the game holding Montana scoreless for 2:30. WSU hung tight and stayed close for most of the first quarter until UM went on a 10-3 run. In the second quarter, WSU trailed 22-20 with six minutes remaining in the half. The Wildcats couldn't overcome the lead and trailed 35-28 at intermission. Weber State came out strong defensively holding UM to one made field goal for the first four minutes of the 3rd quarter. However, WSU couldn't get any offense going. Montana finally broke free of WSU's defensive hold and took off on a 13-2 run. By the end of the third quarter, WSU trailed 56-36. WSU struggled to find offense in the fourth quarter and Montana continued its hot streak. Kayla Watkins led WSU with 14 points. Ula Chamberlin also put up double digits with 11. Jadyn Matthews led the Wildcats on the boards with 11. Weber State shot 28% from the field, 15% from beyond the arc and 70% from the free throw line.
BOBCATS VS. TOP 25: Montana State is 3-24 all-time against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 or USA Today/WBCA Coaches polls, following its 78-67 loss to No. 11 Texas A&M on Dec. 21 in Puerto Rico. MSU's victories have come over Montana, twice, when the Lady Griz were ranked. The Bobcats defeated #17 Montana (58-52 in Bozeman) on March 4, 1994 as well as #16 Montana (58-56 in Bozeman) on March 5, 1988. Squires dished out a season-best seven assists at Sacramento State on Dec. 28 and had a season-best four steals against Wichita State in Puerto Rico. The senior tri-captain has posted 29 three-pointers and 60 assists this season. Last winter, Squires earned All-Big Sky Third-Team accolades after guiding the Bobcats averaging 11.4 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and a steal per game.
MAD ABOUT YOU: Madeline Smith, who has started all 22 games for the Bobcats, is currently averaging 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. In addition, she is hitting at a 45.7% percent clip from beyond the arc and has connected on 16-of-35 three-pointers over the last 13 league games.
BOUNDING WITH BLAIRE: Blaire Braxton, who played in all 31 games, including seven starts for the Bobcats last winter, is currently averaging 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Braxton posted a season-high 12 points in Montana State's win over Weber State on Jan. 23, connecting on three-of-four from the line and career six-of-six from the free throw line. In addition, she added seven rebounds and a blocked shot. Braxton is currently 13th on MSU's all-time rebounding chart with 647 boards. On Thursday night at Idaho State, Braxton was instrumental in helping the Cats expand its lead against the Bengals with six straight points coming off three offensive rebounds. In all, the Highlands Ranch product scored eight points and added four rebounds in the third frame. She ended the contest with her second double-figure scoring game of the season, notching 10 points and six boards.
PRESEASON MVP: Despite not playing in a game for over a year and not ever wearing the Blue and Gold, senior Fallyn Freije was named preseason Big Sky Conference MVP. The Edmore, N.D. product played three seasons at North Dakota before transferring to Bozeman. Freije was a two-time All-Big Sky performer for the Fighting Hawks, where she averaged 13.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as a junior. She played in 90 games and started in 58. Freije has recorded 1,123 points and has amassed 674 rebounds over the course of her collegiate career.
DEEP FREIJE: Senior Fallyn Freije is currently averaging a team-best 13.0 points per game. She is first on the squad pulling down 7.8 rebounds, as well. On the season, Freije has been in double-digit scoring on 17 occasions, including a career-high 27 points in MSU's overtime win at Montana on Feb. 1 in Missoula. Freije posted her fourth double-double of the season with 27 points and 14 rebounds at Montana. The 14 boards were a new career best. In Big Sky Conference action, she is averaging 13.8 points and 8.6 rebounds, while shooting 41.9% from the field and 83.6% from the free throw line.
BARDS OF THE BLOCK: Madeline Smith and Blaire Braxton have manned the blocks for the Bobcats the past four seasons and on Feb. 1 at Montana became the all-time senior tandem in MSU history when it comes to rebounding. The duo has combined for 1,272 rebounds, surpassing the old mark of 1,248 boards held by the senior duo of Blythe Hommes and Julie Brown (1997). She recorded a season-high 15 points in Montana State's win at E. Washington on Jan. 18. Jackson's points came from beyond the arc as she connected on 5-of-8 triples. Jackson was an Idaho state champion in the 100 and 330-meter hurdles, the high jump and as a member of the 4X400-meter relay.
