BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State completes a two-game home stand on Saturday when the Bobcats host Weber State at 6 p.m. in Worthington Arena. The game is a Pack the Place in pink contest. Fans wearing pink will be eligible to purchase a $5 ticket to the game.
The Bobcats and Wildcats meet for the second time this season after their first meeting came down to the wire. Harald Frey found a cutting Amin Adamu under the basket, whose layup with 3.2 seconds remaining sealed an MSU win in which the Bobcats led for only 2:53 of the game's 40 minutes on Jan. 23 in the Dee Events Center.
MSU came back from a 13-point deficit in the second half in the victory over Weber State. The win for the Bobcats snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Wildcats that dated back to 2013. The victory for MSU in Ogden was its first on Weber State's home floor since the 2009 Big Sky Conference tournament.
Weber State has won the last five matchups against Montana State in Bozeman. The Bobcats are looking to earn consecutive victories over the Wildcats for the first time since they completed a three-game win streak that ended in 2006. That streak included two victories over Weber State during the 2004-05 season, which is the last time MSU completed a regular season sweep over the Wildcats.
Montana State jumped out a 12-point first half lead and held off a late Idaho State comeback bid in picking up a 73-69 victory in Worthington Arena Thursday. The win for the Bobcats was their sixth out of the last seven against the Bengals and their fourth straight in the series.
MSU shot 69.2% on 18 of 26 from the field in the first half which was a season-high mark on Thursday. The Bobcats previous best was a 68% clip they completed during the second half of their 72-50 victory over Idaho on Feb. 6.
Danny Sprinkle became MSU's second coach during the Big Sky era to earn wins in his opening two games against Idaho State, matching Roger Craft's team's efforts in 1963. He previously became the first coach in program history to earn a win in his first game coaching in Ogden, Utah. He also was the first to coach to record a victory in his opening game guiding the Bobcats against the Wildcats since Craft did it in 1964.
The Bobcats' 73-69 win over the Bengals improved their record to 13-3 when holding opponents to 70 points or less this season. The 16 foes under 70 points or less is a program best since MSU held 18 opponents to that mark during the 2008-09 season.
Montana State out-rebounded Idaho State, 37-29, to improve its rebound margin to 1.7. That margin ranks 87th in the nation. MSU's highest rank on the NCAA statistical chart is its defensive rebounds per game mark of 28.2 which is 26th in Division I basketball. The Bobcats' 28.6 average in Big Sky play ranks at the top of the conference.
Jubrile Belo tied his career-high with 18 points Thursday and recorded a career-best five blocks. His block output was the most by a Bobcat in a game since Feb. 12, 2015, when Eric Norman swatted five shots against Northern Colorado.
Senior Harald Frey is nearing an unprecedented feat with seven games remaining in the regular season. Frey currently sits at 1,785 career points and 483 assists. The only men's basketball player in Big Sky Conference history to achieve 1,800 career points and 500 assists is Steve Connor (1974-78) of Boise State.
Saturday's matchup will be televised by SWX Montana. SWX Montana can be found on channel 199 or 503 for Charter Spectrum subscribers, while it can also be found through digital antenna offering which can be found here.
