The throws group for the Montana State track and field program will be in action this weekend as the Bobcats head to Spokane, Washington, to compete in the War XII meet at Spokane Falls Community College.
While the rest of MSU's student-athletes train in Bozeman, a group of 12 from the throws discipline are expected to make the trip to Spokane. The War XII meet features the men's and women's hammer throw on Friday starting at 4 p.m. MDT, while the remaining events take place Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's discus.
MSU is looking to take advantage of an additional opportunity to participate in a meet atmosphere. The Bobcats feature a young roster that has only one upperclassmen slated to appear this weekend.
"They are a very young group, so as many reps as they can get will benefit them in the long run," Bobcat throws coach Jennifer Allen said. "Some of the other event groups need the week for training, we need this week to get more reps in competition so we can get better at that."
Junior Carley VonHeeder is the most seasoned of the Bobcats women's throws group. She sits third all-time for the Bobcats in the javelin with a lifetime-best throw of 153 feet, 3 inches. The men's throws has three freshman along with sophomore javelin thrower Brock Winegar who took 15th at the Big Sky Championships a season ago.
The War XII meet will be competed as a dual between the institutions from Washington against the other schools participating. The Northwest Scoring Clash pits 11 universities from Washington against nine universities with teams from Idaho, Montana and Oregon.
