The Montana State golf team dropped into a tie for fifth place following second round play at the Big Sky Championship on Saturday
BOULDER CITY, Nev.– The Montana State golf team dropped into a tie for fifth place following second round play at the Big Sky Championship on Saturday, April 20, at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
MSU carded a second-round score of 310 strokes and is tied with Portland State through 36 holes with a total of 604.
Junior Kelly Hooper and freshman Sofia Rodriguez Todd led the Bobcats in second round action. Hooper shot 2-over on both the front and back nine and finished at 4-over-par 76. Rodriguez was at 1-under through the first nine holes, but eventually also carded a 76.
Senior Clare Dittemore and junior Delaney Elliott rounded out MSU's scoring lineup. Dittemore fired a 5-over 77 and Elliott shot a 9-over 81. Junior Coral Schulz also completed her second round by carding an 84.
"We dropped a couple spots, but considering the conditions, we still have a shot at the top four," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "Sofia, Kelly and Clare's rounds were pretty decent and helped us keep from losing more spots in the standings."
Dittemore is tied for seventh individually among tournament competitors at 3-over-par 147 through 36 holes. Hooper is tied for 14th with 150 strokes and Elliott sits among the top half of the standings as she's tied for 21st with a 152. Rodriguez Todd is tied for 30th at 156 strokes and is followed by Schulz who's tied for 49th at a total of 165.
"Again we need to get that fourth score to have a great round," Basye said. "We need to make more putts in the wind and mentally stay with it even if the wind is howling. Being mentally tough and not making mistakes will be key tomorrow."
Sacramento State leads the team standings with an 11-over 587 heading into the final round. Eastern Washington is in second with 594 strokes. The Eags are followed by Northern Colorado (599) and Idaho (603).
Beah Cruz is the individual leader after 36 holes as she's alone in first place at 2-under (142). Aleksandra Chekalina is in second at an even-par 144.
The Bobcats are slated to tee off at 9:30 a.m. MDT for the final round of the Big Sky Golf Championship in Boulder City on Sunday.
