OGDEN, Utah – With the 2019 outdoor track and field season starting in the near future, the Big Sky Conference announced its preseason coaches' poll on Thursday. Montana State's men's and women's squads rank near the top with both picked to finish third in the Big Sky.
In a vote of the league's coaches, the Northern Arizona men were the unanimous choice to win the 2019 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championship. However, on the women's side, it was Sacramento State and Northern Arizona that received an equal number of points in the preseason poll. NAU received six place votes in the poll while Sacramento State received four.
The Bobcat men's and women's track and field teams were voted among the best in the Big Sky in the preseason poll. The men's program received 99 points trailing only Northern Arizona (121) and Southern Utah (106). MSU finished third at last year's Big Sky Outdoor Championships behind NAU and Southern Utah.
MSU's women's squad sits alone at third in the preseason poll with 94 points ahead of conference foes Montana (79), Weber State (79) and Southern Utah (76). Northern Arizona and Sacramento State each registered 113 points. NAU is the reigning Big Sky outdoor champion, while Sacramento State recently won the 2019 Big Sky Indoor Championship. The Bobcat women took fourth at last year's outdoor championship meet.
Montana State returns to action at the end of the month. The Bobcats closed out their indoor season with a strong performance at the Big Sky Championships in Bozeman on Feb. 23.
The Bobcat men scored 113 points to easily distance themselves from third place Southern Utah (74). Northern Arizona won the men's competition with 178.50 points. The MSU women recorded 79 points, placing ahead of Northern Arizona (75) and Southern Utah (70). Sacramento State won the women's competition with 100 points.
