Letter from Montana State Director of Athletics Leon Costello
Dear Bobcats,
The 2019 spring semester is in full swing, however, I wanted to take a final look back at the academic highlights of the 2018 fall semester. Our Bobcat student-athletes continued to succeed in the classroom. Our average student-athlete GPA during the fall semester was an impressive 3.15. Twenty-seven student-athletes were recognized on the President's List for achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA and 86 were named to the Dean's List with at least a 3.5 GPA. I'd like to personally congratulate the 33 MSU student-athletes that were recently honored as members of the Big Sky Fall All-Academic Team. They continue to show their ability to achieve in the classroom while also having success in competition.
This past week we announced several updates to our administration staff. While some of these changes may not affect what is seen from those outside the Athletic department, they will positively benefit MSU Athletics. The hires we have made and updates to the structure of our department were made to help align ourselves with our goals and priorities in our strategic plan, Our Heritage, Our Future.
Just a couple of weeks ago I had the privilege to volunteer alongside some of our student-athletes and staff members on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It was a great opportunity for us to give back to those that support our athletic programs. Our first MSU Athletics Service Day was a success and I look forward to continuing to expand the opportunities to positively impact our communities.
While the snow may still be falling, we are already looking forward to the 2019 football season at Bobcat Stadium. The Montana State football program recently put the finishing touches on its 2019 Signing Class and season-ticket renewals are on sale now. If you were a season-ticket holder in 2018, make sure to renew your spot in Bobcat Stadium for the six-game home schedule. If you're interested in purchasing season tickets for the first time, contact us at 406-994-CATS, go online to msubobcats.com/tickets or stop by the Bobcat Ticket Office in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
On Saturday, February 16, we will honor longtime MSU Track and Field head coach Dale Kennedy with a reception in Inspiration Hall in the new Norm Asbjornson Hall. We invite you to come celebrate with us. Click HEREfor more information. We will also be hosting the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships February 21-23 in Worthington Arena. We are fortunate to host this championship event and invite all Bobcat fans to come to Worthington Arena and cheer on our student-athletes. For more information, go to the Big Sky Conference Championship page.
It's hard to believe we have entered the second half of the Big Sky Conference basketball schedule. With the regular season winding down, don't miss your chance to watch the men's and women's teams in Worthington Arena. Get your tickets today! Also, don't forget the Big Sky Conference basketball tournament will be held in Boise, ID at CenturyLink Arena. The tournament takes place March 11-16 and you can find all the information about the championship HERE.
Finally, we continue to make progress for Phase I of the Athletics Masterplan. We are excited to have surpassed the $10 million mark but still need your help to get the project completed. Great naming opportunities are still available. For more information on Phase I, click HERE.
We have an exciting couple of months ahead and hope to see you at an upcoming event on campus. Thank you for your continued support of Bobcat Athletics.
Sincerely,
Leon Costello
