The last time the Montana State women’s golf team participated in the Grand Canyon Invitational the Bobcats flew back to Bozeman with hardware in tow. Montana State junior Kelly Hooper claimed medalist honors at the 2018 GCU Invite in Phoenix by winning in a playoff and looks to repeat the feat this weekend.

Montana State junior Kelly Hooper claimed medalist honors at the 2018 GCU Invite in Phoenix by winning in a playoff. She completed her second-best tournament score of the year by carding a three-round score of 3-over-par 219.
The Bobcats return to the Grand Canyon University Golf Course to compete in the 2019 edition beginning on Saturday, Feb. 23. MSU finished tied for ninth out of 15 teams with a tournament score of 927 at last year's tournament hosted by Grand Canyon University.
"We'd like to improve off of what we did last year and obviously Kelly would love to redeem her title," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We're going in with the expectations of that we've been outside once and had three rounds of golf. Grand Canyon is a great golf course to kind of just get out and practice on. Visually it doesn't really set up hard, but the weather doesn't look extremely great, so that might be a challenge.
"As far as the course, it's a good one that is similar to the set up of a few of the ones that we practice on in Bozeman."
The 17-team tournament field will be competing at the GCU course which features a par 72 and 6,187-yard layout. The MSU lineup consists of Hooper, Delaney Elliott, Coral Schulz, Lilly Navarre and Hailey Oster.
Elliott, Navarre and Schulz each appeared at the 2018 GCU Invite, along with Hooper, for the Bobcats with Elliott completing an 18-hole best of 77 in the first round among the three golfers. It will be Oster's first time competing on the Phoenix area course.
"We have four that have played the golf course in our lineup and played it decent," Basye said. "Hailey is a freshman who it will be new to, but she hits it extremely straight and that could be an advantage on this course.
"It's a good field with a few Big Sky schools, so it'll be good to see how we position ourselves with those schools. Then we'll just worry about getting some of the shots in that we don't get to practice on inside and really digging deep and focusing on making those shots correctly."
The GCU Invitational is set to begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday. The tournament field will participate in 36 holes on Saturday then complete play with a third round of 18 holes on Sunday. Live scores from the event are available on golfstatresults.com.
