One meet remains on Montana State track and field’s regular season indoor schedule as the Bobcats host the Big Sky Tuner inside Worthington Arena on Friday
One meet remains on Montana State track and field's regular season indoor schedule as the Bobcats host the Big Sky Tuner inside Worthington Arena on Friday, Nov. 15. Field events open the meet at 4 p.m. with track events starting at 5 p.m.
"We had a really solid meet this last Friday which set us up really well for the Big Sky Conference Championships," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's Director of Track and Field. "We have one more meet this Friday which will help us finalize our roster for the Big Sky Championships. We're dealing with a lot of the details of hosting a championship and the team is getting fired up for it."
The Bobcats swept the competition at their second Dual Meet Invitational on Friday, Feb. 8, picking up dual-scoring wins over Big Sky members Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana and Weber State.
MSU had several standout individual performances. Truanne Roginske became the school record holder in the 60-meter dash, McKenna Ramsay tied her lifetime best in the 400 that's the ninth fastest mark in program history, while both of the Bobcat men's and women's 4x400 relay teams achieved times that moved them on to the program's all-time top 10 lists.
Weese believes the meet was a huge step for the team heading towards the Big Sky meet, especially with all five universities featuring strong field event performers.
"I think it was a great preparer for the Big Sky Conference Championships for our field event competitors," Weese said. "I thought that they performed really well up against their competition. It was great to have a meet like that and take that momentum into the conference championship."
The Big Sky Tuner will feature student-athletes primarily from Montana State, Montana and Carroll College. Montana Western and Southern Idaho will also have athletes competing in the meet on Friday. The field for the Bobcats will feature a variety of competitors that are on different training programs and trajectories heading into next week. MSU currently has a combined 69 marks that rank among the top 20 on the Big Sky performance list.
"It will vary between the event groups," Weese said. "Some athletes may not compete, we'll have some in off events and some will compete in their main event. Really, it's a balance between going into it rested but also not changing up your routine too much."
The 2019 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships take place in Montana State's home confines as the meet gets started with multi-events in Worthington Arena on Thursday, Feb. 21. The 2019 meet marks the ninth time the Bobcats have hosted the indoor championships. It will be the eighth time MSU has competed on its home track this indoor season.
"I think it definitely gives us an advantage not having to travel," Weese said of next week's meet. "Also the facility (is an advantage). There's some particular events like the 200 and 400 where it's important to have been on our track because it's so different than a banked or 300-meter track. Even the 800 can be a little challenging on a 200-meter flat track."
There will not be a live stream available for Friday's event, but updates from the meet can be followed along with live on msubobcats.com/trackresults. The Big Sky Championships will feature a live stream provided on Pluto TV and WatchBigSky.com with live results available throughout.
