MSU is slated to compete against several institutions from the Big Sky State when it hosts its first team appearance of the New Year
The Bobcat track and field program hosts its first team appearance of the New Year on Friday, Jan. 11, when the Montana State Open gets started in Worthington Arena at 3:30 p.m. MSU is slated to compete against several institutions from the Big Sky State including Carroll College, Montana, MSU Billings, Providence and Rocky Mountain.
Montana State opened its 2018-19 season on Dec. 1 by holding the Bobcat Preview in its home confines. While multiple Bobcats participated in the MSU Multis Meet from Jan. 7-8, Friday's action will be the first competitive appearance for Montana State track and field student-athletes in over a month.
"It's always interesting to see how everyone performs in this first meet after the winter break," said Lyle Weese, MSU Director of Track and Field. "We're looking to see where we're at and kind of get a starting point and move forward from there. A lot of times we see really good marks at this meet."
The MSU men's and women's teams currently have 50 marks among the top 10 on the Big Sky performance list. Wyatt Thompson-Siporen sits atop the performance list in the pole vault and heptathlon, while the Bobcats have five other times or marks that are first among conference competition.
Kelsi Lasota was featured by the Big Sky Conference after the Bobcat Preview by being named the league's Women's Track Athlete of the Week for her performance in the 5,000. Thompson-Siporen led a contingent of Bobcats at the Multis Meet to begin the week by producing 5,194 points, good for the fourth highest mark in the heptathlon in program history. The top three finishers for the Bobcats in the Multis Meet all have previously earned all-conference accolades.
"The men's jump group is really strong, especially in the multis," Weese said. "On our entire track and field team, I think that the men's jumps group really stands out. It will be exciting to see them compete during the indoor season."
The MSU men and women were picked to finish third and fifth, respectively, in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches' Poll released in December. The Big Sky Conference indoor meet takes place from Feb. 21-23 inside Worthington Arena. The Bobcats will have five events to prepare for the Big Big Sky Championships beginning with Friday's meet.
The men's weight throw and women's long jump open competition Friday at 3:30 p.m. The first official track events begin at 5 p.m. A community open mile run is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. for those in attendance that would like to participate. Children are invited to run in the Little Bobcat 200 with Champ at approximately 6:10 p.m.
