Following its game against the Bengals, Montana State will host Montana in the annual Brawl of the Wild series on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m., which will complete the first half of the Big Sky season.
ON A SERIES NOTE: MSU leads the all-time series with Idaho State 44-35 dating back to the 1977-78 season. Recently, the Bobcats have captured the last three meetings: Feb. 28, 2018, 61-60, in Pocatello; March 11, 2017, 62-56 in Reno, Nevada; and March 1, 2017, 73-67, in Bozeman. Idaho State's last win over the Bobcats, 67-59, came on Dec. 31, 2016 in Reed Gym.
STAT OF THE WEEK: Five Bobcats reached double-figures against Eastern Washington on last Saturday afternoon. It marked the second straight game and the third of the season where Montana State has had at least five players reach double-digits. The Bobcats had a season-best six players hit double-figures against Long Beach State on Nov. 30 in an 85-62 win over the 49ers.
THAT WAS THE GAME THAT WAS:
The Montana State women's basketball team overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to notch a 66-59 win over Weber State on Thursday night in the Dee Events Center.
Montana State (10-8, 5-3) trailed early as Weber State (4-14, 1-7) jumped out to an 8-0 advantage. The Bobcats closed to within two-points after the opening frame, but the Wildcats pushed its margin to 33-23 at intermission as Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman connected on a jumper with six-seconds remaining.
Weber State out-rebounded MSU 28-15 in the opening half and out-scored the Bobcats 22-6 in the paint.
Montana State opened the third quarter on a 16-4 run capped by Martha Kuderer's three-pointer at the 4:26 mark to give the Bobcats its first lead at 39-37. Tori Martell's triple with 2:49 left gave MSU a five-point advantage, before WSU answered with five unanswered points. The Bobcats held a 47-46 lead heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter featured two ties and a lead change before a pair of free throws by Gabby Mocchi with 4:11 remaining ignited a 6-0 run. The run was highlighted by a Blaire Braxton layup with 2:02 left to give MSU a 60-54 advantage.
Weber State's Dominique Williams nailed a three-pointer to cut the margin to 60-57 with a little over a minute remaining but Claire Lundberg responded with a triple of her own to give MSU some breathing room. Oliana Squires put the game to bed connecting on three-of-four charity tosses in the final 18-seconds to secure the win.
Lundberg paced all scorers with a game-high 23 points, while Braxton and Martell added 13 and ten, respectively.
MSU out-scored the Wildcats 43-26 in the second half, shooting 42 percent from the field, including a six-of-12 effort from long distance. The Bobcats also turned the tables under the glass out-rebounding WSU 20-16.
Braxton and Kuderer guided Montana State under the boards with seven rebounds, apiece, while Martell hauled down five.
Welch-Coleman paced Weber State with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds.
MORE ON THE BENGALS: The Bengals defeated Montana on Thursday night in Reed Gym, holding the Lady Griz to a program low in its 50-34 victory. Grace Kenyon, Saylair Grandon and Callie Bourne all scored 11 points to guide the ISU offensive efforts. Kenyon and Grandon also added ten rebounds, apiece, to secure the double-double. The Bengal defense limited the Lady Griz to 25.9 percent shooting, including a dismal three-of-21 effort from long distance. ISU forced UM into 21 turnovers, which they converted into 19 points. On the season, Kenyon, Grandon and Estefania Ors are all averaging double-digits at 13.9, 13.3 and 12.1 points per game, respectively. Kenyon and Grandon also guide the Bengals under the glass hauling down 6.7 and 6.1 rebounds per game, respectively. ISU's two Big Sky losses have come to Idaho and Northern Colorado. The Bengals were 5-4 in non-conference play.
LAUDING LUNDBERG: Seton Hall transfer Claire Lundberg has made an immediate impact on the court. The Anoka High School product is fifth in the Big Sky averaging 18.1 points per contest. In addition, she is first in three-point field-goal percentage (42.3), second in points (326) and field-goals made (115), fourth in free throw percentage (87.5), three-point field-goals per game (2.61), three-point field-goals made (47), field-goals attempted (252) and field-goal percentage (45.6), and fifth in three-point field goals attempted (111). Lundberg opened the season hitting her first 22 attempts from the charity stripe, just three shy to the record held by Rebecca Mercer. On the season, Lundberg has been in double-digit scoring in 17 of 18 games, including seven games with 20 points or more. She posted a season-high 28 points in MSU's win over Delaware on Nov. 16. Lundberg was Big Sky Player of the Week for Nov. 20 after averaging 27 points and six rebounds as MSU knocked-off Delaware and Texas State in WNIT action. The native of Andover, Minn., threw a perfect game against Texas State on Nov. 17 hitting eight-of-eight from the field, four-of-four from long distance and six-of-six from the free throw line. In MSU's win at Weber State on Thursday night, Lundberg notched a game-high 23 points, which included a five-of-nine outing from long distance.
HOLY MOLY, OLI: Oliana Squires is averaging 11.2 points per game. The Colorado Springs, Colo., product notched a season and career-high 21 points in MSU's win over Northern Arizona on Dec. 31. In the season-opener against No. 19-ranked Marquette, Squires nailed four 3-pointers. She has been in double-digit scoring in 12 of MSU's 18 games. Squires nearly pulled off a triple double at Sacramento State on Jan.5 with 13 points, a career-high ten rebounds and seven assists. Against Weber State on Thursday she dished out three assists.
KUDERER'S KUDOS: Junior Martha Kuderer, who also sat out last season after transferring from Seton Hall, is averaging 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. She had her best Big Sky outing recording 19 points and six rebounds in MSU's win at Sacramento State. Her best weekend of the season came against Delaware and Texas State in the WNIT when she averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds, while shooting 62.5 percent from the field. Kuderer had her best outing against Texas State with a season-high 21 points. In MSU's win over Delaware she posted 17 points and 10 rebounds for her only double-double at MSU. On the season, she has been in double-digit scoring on eight occasions.
BARDS OF THE BLOCK: Juniors Madeline Smith and Blaire Braxton have manned the blocks for the Bobcats the past three seasons. The duo has swapped starting time at the five and each average 19 minutes or more per contest. Braxton, a product of Highlands Ranch, Colo., is first on the team hauling down 5.8 rebounds per game, while Smith, from Snohomish, Wash., is third averaging 5.1 per contest. Braxton recorded a career-high 18 points in MSU's loss to Idaho on Jan. 10. For the game, she connected on seven-of-11 from the field and was four-of-six from the line. She also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds and had a block. Smith registered a season-high 16 points against Northern Colorado knocking down seven-of-10 attempts to go along with seven rebounds. Smith has been in double-figure scoring on five occasions, while Braxton has four double-digit games. On the season, the duo has combined to shoot an impressive 57 percent (100-175) from the floor.
THE WRIGHT STUFF: Freshman Halle Wright received her first start against TCU on Dec. 8. The Aumsville, Ore., product missed the first three games with a leg injury, but has started 11 straight since coming back. Last Saturday against Eastern Washington, Wright saw 36 minutes of action and recorded 13 points, including nine points in the overtime period. She finished the game connecting on 5-of-8 from the field. Wright also added a season-high eight assists and seven rebounds in the loss. She is averaging 6.3 points and 3.1 assists in Big Sky action.
TORI, TORI, TORI: Montana State sophomore Tori Martell has connected on 27 three-pointers this season. The Somerset, Wis., native connected on 36 three-pointers, including 19 in the last eight games of the season, last winter. She is currently averaging 7.7 points per game in Big Sky play. Martell found her stroke from outside in Montana State's win at Northern Colorado on Jan. 14 scoring a career-high 19 points, which included a 5-of-8 performance from beyond the three-point line. She went 4-of-8 from long distance against EWU and was 3-of-6 from the arc at Weber State.
FEET TO THE FIRE: Freshman Gabby Mocchi has played in all 18 games and is averaging 2.4 points per game. She posted a season-best eight points at Wyoming on Nov. 27. Against Northern Colorado on Jan. 14 she connected on a pair of triples. Freshman Kamden Hilborn has played in 16 games and has dished out 23 assists, while adding eleven steals. The Helena High product is averaging 13 minutes per game as well as 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds.
THROWING SHAIDE: Madisyn Shaide had a career night against then No. 19 Marquette. The Missoula native went 2-of-4 from beyond the arc for a career-high six points.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Cats saw the nation's second longest home court win streak snapped against Portland State on Jan. 11, 2018. The loss broke MSU's 31-game home streak. Before the loss to PSU, Montana State's last defeat in Worthington Arena was a 62-49 decision to San Diego on Nov. 24, 2015. MSU has won 40 of its last 45 games in The Brick. The Bobcats are averaging 2,221 fans per game, which includes its sold out crowd of 6,772 against Carroll College on Nov. 6. MSU is ranked 56th in the nation in attendance.
