James Campbell is a speedy receiver for the Bobcats in jersey #4
August 26: Bobcats by the Numbers takes a look at current and past Bobcats whose jersey numbers correspond to the number of days remaining before Montana State opens the 2018 football season against Western Illinois in Bobcat Stadium's annual Gold Rush game on Thursday!
#4
James Campbell, WR: A redshirt freshman receiver a year ago, James Campbell brings eye-catching speed to the receiving corps. He is expected to compete for time at the outside receiver positions.
Spotlight – Rodney Ellis, LB: One day in August of 1994, Cliff Hysell sauntered toward Rodney Ellis and said simply, "I'm glad you're here, Rodney." Most of Hysell's conversations were that short, and many of Ellis' were. It's a sentiment many coaches have shared with many players through the year, but it had to be especially meaningful for Ellis to hear, because his twin brother, the more heralded of the two, was playing at Northern Arizona. Rodney was a tremendous player for the Cats, finishing fourth on the team with 82 tackles in 1994 as a junior in spite of not starting a single game. He moved into the starting lineup the next season, and recorded 70 tackles, five for a loss, with six quarterback hurries. Ellis made the biggest play in one of Montana State's most fun non-conference wins of the '90s. With the Cats off to a 2-1 start, Southwest Texas State's Bobcats invaded Reno H. Sales for a showdown between a pair of teams looking to crash the rankings and the national I-AA scene. Southwest Texas turned an early Bobcat turnover – a fumbled punt return – into a touchdown, and still leading 7-0 was on the march late in the first quarter. At the MSU 45-yard line, Ellis stepped in front of an SWT pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to turn that game around. Montana State ended up thundering SWT 45-24 on a sunny afternoon, and Ellis' play was as big as any that day.
