“We had a lot of contributors,” said MSU second-year head coach Daniel Jones. “I’m really satisfied to get a hard fought win. It took a little bit to settle our nerves, but some tough serving kept them on their heels and allowed us to keep pressing.”
Senior Natalie Passeck posted a match-high 21 kills to guide the Montana State volleyball team to a season-opening victory over Canisius on Friday morning at the Cleveland State Invitational. The Bobcats captured a 25-27, 25-10, 25-22, 17-25, 15-13 decision over the Golden Griffins.
"We had a lot of contributors," said MSU second-year head coach Daniel Jones. "I'm really satisfied to get a hard fought win. It took a little bit to settle our nerves, but some tough serving kept them on their heels and allowed us to keep pressing."
Montana State (1-0) held set point at 24-23 in the opening frame, but Canisius (0-1) fought back with a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 match lead on a service ace. The second game was all MSU as the Bobcats outhit the Golden Griffins .286 to .000.
The Bobcats went up 2-1 with a 25-22 decision in the third set, rallying from an early 10-5 deficit with five straight points at the midway mark. MSU took the set on a Canisius hitting error. The Golden Griffins tied the match at 2-all closing out the fourth frame on a 5-0 run to force a deciding set.
MSU broke away from 8-all in the final stanza with a 4-1 run led by two kills via sophomore Hannah Scott. Canisius closed to within 14-13, but a Golden Griffin hitting miscue gave the Bobcats the victory.
"The strength of this team is the team," Jones said. "We can go deep into our squad with confidence knowing anyone can step out and compete at a high level."
Passeck finished a kill shy of matching her career-high, while hitting .377 from the field. She added 11 digs, as well. Also in double-figure kills were Evi Wilson 13 and Kelsie White 10. Scott finished with seven kills and a .636 attack mark, all coming in the fifth set.
"Natalie is a tireless worker and earned every kill she got," Jones said. "Hannah came in and provided a really nice spark to help close it out."
Carina Lehto, a junior transfer from Mississippi State, dished out a match-high 57 assists, while recording nine digs and four aces. Defensively, MSU was led by Allyssa Rizzo with 29 digs, while Lexi Goroski 12, Passeck and Sydney Mathison 10 also reached double digits.
The Bobcats will play Cleveland State on Friday at 5 p.m. (MT). The Vikings are the three-time defending Horizon League champions.
