MOSCOW, Idaho – Montana State's men's track and field team will begin day three of the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in the lead thanks to lifetime bests and all-conference performances by Mason Storm and Caleb Neth on Wednesday, May 9, as the decathlon and heptathlon wrapped up at the Dan O'Brien Track and Field Complex.
Storm and Neth finished in second and third place in the decathlon, respectively, to give the Bobcats 14 points towards their team total. Storm ended the day with 7,161 points – the 5th highest total in program history – and Neth completed his first all-Big Sky effort with 6,749 points.
"The multis often set the tone at a championship and these guys really did that," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "Both got lifetime bests and I think they did a really great job. (Portland State's Donte) Robinson just came up with a huge javelin throw that put it out of reach. We can certainly be proud of our kids for what they accomplished."
Storm completed his final decathlon as a Bobcat by earning first-place marks in five of the 10 events. The Great Falls, Mont., native led going into the second to last event, the javelin, but Robinson took the lead for good with a throw of over 200 feet. Storm recorded personal-best marks in both the pole vault (14-05.50) and javelin (125-04) to go along with a first-place time in the 110-meter hurdles of 14.71 seconds.
Storm's 2018 Big Sky meet performance easily topped his previous best of 6,586 points he set en route to the outdoor conference title in 2016 as a sophomore, while his total also currently put him in the top 30 in the nation in the event.
"I'm extremely happy with it," Storm said of his decathlon effort. "It was fun to get out here and put together a good multi. It's something I've been trying do for years and I couldn't ask for a better way to end it."
Robinson claimed 10 points for Portland State by finishing first in the decathlon. He finished 146 points ahead of Storm with his total of 7,307.
Neth moved up from seventh following the first five events to earn a bronze medal with his performance on Wednesday. Neth made the four-spot jump in the individual standings by taking no higher than seventh in an event on the second day of the decathlon.
The Manhattan, Mont., native notched a lifetime-best throw in the discus of 127 feet, 5 inches (38.84m). Neth also recorded a personal-best clearance in the pole vault (14-01.75) and took third in the javelin throw (155-02).
"Honestly, I was just just blessed to come out here to compete," Neth said. "I got to compete with Mason and we just talked before we got started that we wanted to stay with each other. We pushed each other and it was great to do this with this being his senior year."
Neth placed sixth in the final event, the 1,500, one spot behind Storm to solidify his third-place finish. The sophomore topped Montana's Josh Riley for the final spot on the podium by 71 points.
"The biggest thing now is we each have to focus in our events on doing the best we can and to compete," Neth said of the next two days. "My goal is to do just the best I can and to cheer on my teammates. We're going to put something together I think that will be special."
Rounding out the Bobcat contingent on Wednesday was freshman Jazmin Wilberg who took 12th overall in the women's heptathlon. Wilberg recorded a personal-best total of 4,037 points behind a lifetime-best mark in the 800 (2:43.14).
The majority of events at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships begin at 11 a.m. MDT on Thursday, May 10, with the women's hammer throw commencing competition. Track events are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. Live results can be tracked throughout the conference meet on FinishedResults.com or on the Finished Results mobile app. A live stream of the meet will be provided on WatchBigSky.com and on the Pluto TV app.
