GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Montana State golf team improved two strokes and moved up two spots during the final round of play to finish seventh at the Bobcat Spring Invitational on Tuesday, April 10, at the Golf Club of Estrella.
The Bobcats completed the third round with a team score of 303 for a total of 916 (308-305-303). MSU came into the day in ninth place, but jumped McNeese State and Big Sky opponent Southern Utah to take seventh by one stroke. Grand Canyon won the team title with an 871 and Portland State finished runner-up at 878.
"I think the biggest thing for us has been the word we've preached all semester which is consistency," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We proved that during this tournament. We improved each round, which is a positive, and we're going to use this as momentum going into conference."
Junior Clare Dittemore and sophomore Delaney Elliott led MSU during the final round of play. Montana State's No. 3 and No. 4 players in the rotation finished at 3-over-par 75. Senior Jaylee Tait shot a 76 and sophomore Kelly Hooper fired a 77 to contribute to the Bobcats' best round of the tournament.
Tait finished in a tie for 19th at 11-over 227 (75-76-76) to lead the Bobcats in the individual standings. Hooper and Elliott each carded a 228 over the two-day span to tie for 25th overall. Dittemore rounded out the MSU lineup by tying for 28th overall with a 233.
"The big thing in golf is having any player in our lineup be able to compete," Basye said. "You'd obviously like every player vying for positions, but it doesn't always work that way. For us to have four players vying for the top spot in our lineup is huge."
The Bobcats wrapped up their regular season with Tuesday's third round of the MSU-hosted Invitational. Montana State looks ahead to the Big Sky Conference Championship in Boulder City, Nev. The Bobcats will compete from April 20-22 at Boulder Creek Golf Course.
"There's definitely some things we need to work on and fine tune to get ready for the conference meet," Basye said. "Overall, I think the girls are playing well. I think they're happy with their games right now. There are just a couple of shots keeping us from playing very, very good golf. I'm proud of the girls for staying consistent."
