The Montana State women's golf team is set to compete at the Portland State/Eastern Washington Invitational in Chandler, Ariz., at Ocotillo Golf Course from March 27-29. It's the first of three consecutive tournaments in Arizona the Bobcats will participate in before the Big Sky Conference Championship that takes place in Boulder City, Nev., beginning on April 20.
"We're going back to Ocotillo and that's interesting because we've played conference there so many times," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "In the past, it's a course we've played multiple times. Jaylee is the only one that's played it (on this roster), so it will be interesting to see how this team performs versus how teams have in the past just because of the differences and progress we've made over the years."
Several MSU individuals have had success at Ocotillo Golf Club in previous team appearances.
The Big Sky Championship was played at Ocotillo Golf Club from 2009-2015, a span that included the Bobcats' best 54-hole tournament score in program history. Paige Crawford won the 2013 Big Sky Championship individual title with a 208 which is eight strokes ahead of MSU's second-best three-round score. Former Bobcat Kelly Gillum also claimed medalist honors at the Cowgirl Invitational at Ocotillo in April of 2009.
The Ocotillo course features a par 72 layout and distance of 6,199 yards. The Bobcats will play an 18-hole round each day of the tournament. Rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday will start at approximately 11 a.m. MDT, while the field will tee off for the final round at 8 a.m. Thursday.
"I think it's a golf course that we can score on if we play well and smart," Basye said. "It's a smaller tournament so I think it will be a good warmup to just get back to the desert, hit on green grass, putt on greens and just enjoy a week of getting some major practice in."
Six teams will participate in the tournament hosted by Eastern Washington and Portland State. The two hosts will be joined by MSU, Montana, UMKC and Seattle for the three-day meet.
The Bobcat contingent will feature Jaylee Tait, Kelly Hooper, Delaney Elliott, Lilly Navarre and Coral Schulz. Clare Dittemore will also compete as an individual. Results will be available throughout the meet with live scores updated on golfstatresults.com.
