Montana State Golf Rebounds in Round 2 at Battle at the Rock

The Montana State women's golf team rebounded from a rough first round to finish a solid second set of 18 holes and complete first day action at the Battle at the Rock on Monday, Feb. 12, at Oak Quarry Golf Club.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Montana State women's golf team rebounded from a rough first round to finish a solid second set of 18 holes and complete first day action at the Battle at the Rock on Monday, Feb. 12, at Oak Quarry Golf Club.
The Bobcats opened the day with a 318, but came back to pick up 18 strokes in the second round for a first-day total of 618 strokes. MSU currently stands at 14th heading into the final 18 holes Tuesday.
Sophomore Delaney Elliott was MSU's most consistent golfer of the day. Elliott fired back-to-back rounds of 77 and 75 and currently sits at 8-over-par (152) and is tied for 35th overall.
Senior Jaylee Tait and sophomore Kelly Hooper had the Bobcats' best single-round efforts.
Tait and Hooper both shot even-par during the second round. Tait is tied for 35th with 152 strokes (80-72), while Hooper is in a tie for 43rd with a two-round score of 154 (82-72).
"I'm happy that we came back with a 300 in the second round," Montana State head coach Brittany Bayse said. "It was the first time out, all of them except Jaylee haven't played since October, so I didn't expect a ton but I also don't expect big numbers either. I'm proud of how consistent Delaney was, she played well today. Jaylee and Kelly both came back to have good rounds."
Sophomore Coral Schulz is tied for 72nd with 160 (79-81) and junior Clare Dittemore sits in 80th overall at 167 (84-83). Lilly Navarre, playing as an individual in the tournament, is also tied for 70th with a 160 (82-78).
UC Davis leads the team standings with a team stroke count of 579. The Aggies are followed by Hawai'I (585) and tournament host UC Riverside (587). Hana Furuichi of UC Riverside is the individual leader at 4-under (140), while three others are tied for second at 3-under (141).
"We've got to get a fourth score," Basye said. "We just have to continue to preach about consistency. It's hard to do when we haven't been outside, but there's things that we can do to minimize mistakes. We have to capitalize when we hit good shots. We just didn't have the shots to take advantage of good situations.
"I'm hoping tomorrow they can go out and just trust their games."
The Bobcats return to play on Tuesday with a shotgun start of 9 a.m. MDT. Fans can follow along with MSU's progress in its third and final round of 18 holes at GolfStatResults.com.
