The Montana State women's tennis team opened its Big Sky Conference season defeating a depleted Portland State squad 5-2 on Sunday in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Playing with just four athletes, Portland State defaulted at No. 3 doubles and Montana State (2-4, 1-0) cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles to take the opening point heading into singles action.
Again, the Vikings defaulted at Nos. 5 and 6 singles giving the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage. Senior Angelina Philippova clinched the MSU victory with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 decision over Portland State's Gerda Upeniece at No. 3 singles.
MSU sophomore Laura Mary followed with a come-from-behind win at the top spot, defeating PSU's Alli Valk 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) to give the Cats a 5-0 margin. The Vikings captured the last two points winning at Nos. 2 and 4, both in a third-set tiebreaker.
"It was unusual situation and it really put a lot of pressure on players that aren't always in that position," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "I thought we got outstanding senior leadership from Angelina (Philippova). She was responsible for a doubles point and she clinched the match. That's what you need a player with her experience to do.
"You also have to give a lot of credit to Portland State," Reeves stated. "They're in a tough spot, but I thought they really competed well."
Montana State is off until they face Portland in Missoula on March 3.
