NEXT UP: Following its season-opening victory in front of a sellout crowd of 6,772 in Worthington Arena on Tuesday, the Montana State women's basketball team will travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to face No. 19/19 Marquette, Friday, Nov. 9 at the Al McGuire Center. The contest is part of the WNIT's opening- round. Sixteen teams will participate in the WNIT and are guaranteed three games. The winner of Friday's game will play either Northern Iowa or Delaware on Nov. 11. The loser will most likely play two games the following week at a site to be determined.
ON A SERIES NOTE: Montana State and Marquette have met twice. MSU won the first encounter 71-68 on Dec. 29, 1994 as part of the Junkanoo Shootout in Nassau, Bahamas. The Golden Eagles returned the favor on Nov. 26, 2005 defeating the Bobcats 76-48 in Bozeman in the championship game of the Wingate Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
ROAD OPENERS: Montana State has dropped its last two road openers- 2017 at USC, 2016 at Utah. Its last win (2015) was an 80-51 win at Seattle U.
THAT WAS THE GAME THAT WAS: Montana State newcomer Claire Lundberg scored a game-high 25 points to guide the Bobcats to a 64-48 victory over Carroll College on Tuesday afternoon in front of 6,772 Bobcat School Day spectators. It marked the first ever sellout of a Bobcat women's basketball game. Leading by four points after the opening frame, Montana State rattled off a 15-5 run capped by a Lundberg 3-pointer at the 4:36 mark. The Saints chipped the lead down to six points heading into intermission. MSU, who struggled finding its range from beyond the three-point line in the opening half, shooting just 20 percent, started pounding the ball into Lundberg down low in the waning moments of the third quarter. The Anoka, Minn., product responded connecting on four-of-four from the field, including six points in the final 1:48. Montana State's Oliana Squires connected on a triple with 8:58 remaining in the game and the Bocbats never gave up its double-digit advantage Lundberg finished the contest shooting 11-of-14 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. Also in double-figures for the Cats were Squires 11 and Madeline Smith 10. MSU finished the game shooting 46 percent from the floor. MSU held a slight advantage under the glass, out-rebounding Carroll 31-28. Martha Kuderer and Tori Martell led Montana State with seven boards, apiece. Carroll College was led by Hannah Dean with 13 points and six rebounds. "I think the biggest take away and the message after the game was being able to play in these types of atmospheres and being able to execute," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "We talked about communication on both ends of the floor. We didn't get everybody on the same page offensively, and that is why we never really got in to a good flow. Part of that was Carroll changing up some defense, but it was also self-induced by us not being in the same play. On the defensive end, we had too many communication breakdowns."
MORE ON MARQUETTE: No. 19/19 Marquette opened its season in convincing fashion dispatching South Dakota State 91-52 on Tuesday in the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles had five players in double-figures led by Natisha Hiedeman with 21 points. Hiedeman, who is Marquette's biggest outside threat, connected on five-of-nine from beyond the arc. Allazia Blockton, who was last year's BIG EAST Player of the Year, posted 19 points. Two other starters, Erika Davenport and Amani Wilborn, scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, against the Jackrabbits. All five senior starters return for the Golden Eagles. Last season, MU posted a 24-10 overall mark and won the Big East title. Marquette advanced to the second-round of the NCAA Tournament, last March. Carolyn Kieger is in her fifth season at Marquette. Last season, she was named the BIG EAAST Co-Coach of the Year after guiding the Golden Eagles to a 15-3 league record.
