Montana State boasts veteran lineup in 2018-19
BOZEMAN, Montana – Familiar faces, some in different places, is the theme as Montana State plays UM Western in a men's basketball exhibition on Tuesday at 8 pm in Worthington Arena. The game follows an MSU-UMW women's contest.
Four starters return for the Bobcats, led by 2017-18 leading scorer Tyler Hall, who mans his familiar wing position. Harald Frey and Sam Neumann also return as third-year starters, but each fill a different role. Frey slides to a wing for most of his minutes, assuming a more offensive-oriented role, while Neumann should spend more time at his more natural forward position. Forward Keljin Blevins also returns.
The emergence of point guard Russell Daniels, a junior college transfer, facilitated Frey's move, which fifth-year head coach Brian Fish has called successful so far. "Harry has looked good and comfortable" in a role that highlights his shooting skill, Fish said. Neumann's flexibility, and the presence of 6-11 transfer Usman Haruna and 6-11 redshirt Devin Kirby, along with 6-9 freshman Maximilian Schuecker, made that move possible.
"Sam's a glue guy and he does so many of the little things that fans may not notice but that help our team," Fish said. "Having more bodies inside, more help for Sam, has been a positive."
Forward Ladan Ricketts is new to the Bobcat program, transferring from Sheridan (Wyoming) Junior College in the summer, but the former Park High star is a familiar name in the Gallatin Valley. Kirby has posted a strong off-season after redshirting last year, and he and sophomore point guard Lassi Nikkarinen fo4rm the heart of a strong bench. Freshman Quentin Guliford also provides punch off the bench, although Fish indicated that his classmate, Zeke Quinlan, is doubtful for Tuesday with an injury.
Hall will generate considerable interest this season, and rightly so. He has posted one of the spectacular careers in Big Sky Conference history. He enters his senior season 10th all-time in league history in scoring, third at MSU, with 1,861 points. He is 30 three-pointers from the Big Sky record in that category.
UM Western has played once in 2018-19, a 94-89 win over Salish Kootenai College on October 20.
