Montana State Looks to Continue Success Away From Bozeman at Powder River Dual
1/25/2018 10:15:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Fresh off sweeping three opponents in their last dual meet, the Bobcats travel to Wyoming for the annual Powder River Dual to compete against the Cowboys and Cowgirls
Montana State's track and field teams hit the road for the first time during the indoor season when they participate in the Powder River Dual against Wyoming. The Bobcats compete against the Cowboys and Cowgirls for the fifth straight year at Campbell Country Parks and Recreation Center in Gillette, Wyo., with events beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27.
MSU heads into its fourth of seven regular-season team meets before the 2018 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships, presented by Red Lion Hotels. The Bobcats go into their meeting with Wyoming 2-2 all-time on the men's side and 1-3 in the women's dual. MSU's men topped Wyoming's 77-73 last season and 61-50.5 in 2015, while the women's team's lone victory in the series came in 2015 (76-47.5).
"We've gotten better as each week has passed by," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "This week will be another opportunity. Wyoming historically has a very strong program. There will be some really good matchups in several of the events and that's always exciting. We've got the team scoring element going and I think that brings up a little higher level of performance."
The Bobcats go into the second half of their schedule with high rankings in the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches' Association Regional Index.
In the first release of the USTFCCCA Division I Regional Team Rankings on Monday, MSU's men's and women's teams were both slotted at fifth in the Mountain Region. The Bobcats' men's score of 231.40 is 15 points behind fourth-place Colorado State and is more than 70 points ahead of Utah State. While the women's squad is 40 points behind Colorado for fourth, the Bobcats (179.50) sit ahead of Northern Arizona (178.29) and Utah State (176.89).
MSU's regional rankings come off a solid performance in the Dual Meet Invitational the Bobcats hosted on Jan. 19 at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
The Bobcats had three individuals earn three all-time top 10 program marks and swept its three opponents – Idaho State, Montana and Utah State. Following the meet, MSU holds a combined 68 top 20 marks on the Big Sky performance list among 48 athletes.
"I thought collectively and collaboratively we did really well," Kennedy said. "To come out with three dual wins, Utah State was ranked higher than our men's team, and Montana's women's team was ranked higher. I thought our kids really stepped up and met the challenge."
Following the Powder River Dual, the Bobcats return home for three consecutive meets. MSU hosts the Bobcat Invitational (Feb. 2), the second MSU Dual Meet (Feb. 9) and the Big Sky Tuner (Feb. 16) to prepare for the Big Sky meet.
"This breaks the halfway mark of the season coming into the dual meet with Wyoming," Kennedy said. "We need to continue in our program to train for development still. We're a ways away from trying to be at peak performance right now. The training is pretty heavy this week and will be next week as well. We'll really try to light things up with our meet here on Feb. 9."
