On Friday afternoon, with a slightly different change in venue, the Vandals handed the Bobcats a 4-1 setback in semifinal action of the league tournament at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
The script was almost the same.
Six days ago the Montana State women's tennis team completed its regular-season with a 6-1 loss to two-time defending Big Sky Champion Idaho in Lewiston. On Friday afternoon, with a slightly different change in venue, the Vandals handed the Bobcats a 4-1 setback in semifinal action of the league tournament at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
As with its last meeting, Montana State (14-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage taking the doubles point. MSU's top tandem of Laura Middel and Chloe Goyette recorded a 6-4 win over Idaho's (15-7) Marianna Petrei and Lucia Badillos. The Bobcats clinched the point at No. 3 as Angelina Philippova and Wanda Holopainen combined for a 6-4 win over Claire Yang and Shion Watabe.
Middle and Goyette finished the season with a Big Sky Conference best 12-1 mark in doubles play. Middel, a senior from Hoogezand, Netherlands, completed her career going 18-1 at the top doubles spot in Big Sky play over the past two seasons.
Idaho evened the match at 1-1 as Badillos dispatched Naomi Holopainen 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The Vandals then took Nos. 1, 4 and 5 singles to secure the win and move onto the Big Sky Championship match on Saturday against Northern Arizona.
Middel and Wanda Holopainen each took their singles matches to a third set, but went unfinished after UI clinched the victory.
"We have made tremendous strides in two years' time," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "I'm incredibly proud of this team's efforts to take this program to heights unseen in many years. Our five seniors should be deeply proud of the impact and direction in which they are leaving their program."
MSU's 14 victories is the best since the 1997 Bobcats set a school-record with 17 wins.
