MSU takes to road with momentum
Brian Fish has spent the last two months talking about the strong guard play in the Big Sky Conference, and his Montana State Bobcats run head-first into that reality again this weekend when the Bobcats close the regular season at Idaho State on Thursday and Weber State on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 pm.
"Every team has really good guards," Fish said, preparing for the challenge of facing the mercurial Bengals backcourt of Ethan Telfair and Brandon Boyd. Telfair averages 16.8 points a game with 124 assists, while Boyd checks in at 12.5 points a game. The two have combined for 91 three-pointers and 240 free throw attempts.
Fish lauds the veteran Telfair. "I get calls from NBA scouts asking who I think they need to see in our league and I always bring up Telfair," he said. "He's done a lot of great things for that program, he had a great year last year, and this year's he's really done a good job. I have tremendous respect for his competitiveness. He can do a little bit of everything to take a game over."
Idaho State (5-23 overall, 3-13 in the Big Sky) also features on of the league's top true big men, Novak Topalovic. The seven-footer snares 6.5 rebounds a game, and shoots 60.7 percent from the floor. Geno Luzcando plays a complementary role on a wing, averaging 10.4 points a game.
While the Bengals play their final weekend at home, MSU hits the road after a raucous night in the Fieldhouse on Saturday. Montana State (now 15-14 overall, 10-6 in the Big Sky) toppled Montana in a sold-out Worthington Arena. The sometimes-deafening crowd helped MSU cap a home season that featured a dozen wins, including the last six in a row.
Fish maintains a focus on the next game up, with an eye toward next week's Big Sky Tournament in Reno. "It's about finding a way to win," he says, "but we want to keep getting better. We're finding ways to win, and that's good, but teams that have success in March are the ones that continue to improve."
