Bobcats Extend Home Win Streak; Topple Lumberjacks

Montana State extended the nation’s fourth-longest home win streak with a dominant performance against Northern Arizona, 86-69, Thursday night in front of 1,546 fans in Worthington Arena.
Montana State extended the nation's fourth-longest home win streak with a dominant performance against Northern Arizona, 86-69, Thursday night in front of 1,546 fans in Worthington Arena.
Montana State (17-5, 10-2) used a balanced attack finishing with five scorers in double digits. Riley Nordgaard recorded a team-high 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, for her sixth double-double of the season. Peyton Ferris notched 12 before fouling out late in the final quarter. Also in double-figures were Annika Lai 11, including a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night, Hannah Caudill 10, and freshman Blaire Braxton with a season-best 10 points.
The Bobcats also held a commanding 32-4 advantage in bench scoring.
"I thought our bench was giving us a lot," said MSU 12th-year head coach Tricia Binford. "A lot of our starters looked tired. It's just that time of year you got to pay attention to energy and fatigue."
After a close first period, the Cats pulled away from the Lumberjacks in the second frame with consecutive 3-pointers from Ferris and Nordgaard. Montana State entered intermission with a 45-30 advantage.
Northern Arizona (6-17, 2-10) cut the MSU lead to nine at the end of the third, but the Cats came out on fire in the final quarter on an 8-0 run with back-to-back baskets from Lai. MSU shot 58.3 percent from the field in the final stanza.
The Bobcats held a 45-33 advantage under the boards. Aside from Nordgaard's total, Braxton pulled down nine rebounds, while Delany Junkermier grabbed seven caroms.
"The offensive rebounds, in particular, the first half really carried us," Binford said. "We really rely on the extra possessions. We are an energy type of team, so winning the possession count is always an important factor for us."
Northern Arizona's Olivia Lucero led all scorers with 29.
The Bobcats look to make it 22 straight homes wins Saturday against Southern Utah. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
