Montana State overcame a dismal first quarter to beat rival Montana 71-54, Saturday afternoon in front of 3,273 fans in Worthington Arena. The victory gives MSU its first back-to-back 20-win seasons in school history; its first sweep of the Lady Griz since 1999; and secured a top 4 seed at the Big Sky Conference Tournament in two weeks.
It took Montana State (20-6, 13-3) 15-minutes to get on track after shooting just 15 percent in the opening period. Montana (5-22, 2-14) was able to stake a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
A 3-pointer by Riley Nordgaard followed by an and-1 from Margreet Barhoum sparked an 8-0 run for the Cats in the second period. Sophomore Annika Lai scored six straight points off the bench to pull MSU to within 29-26 at intermission.
"I feel like we got good looks, we just didn't execute," said Bobcat senior standout Peyton Ferris. "We went into halftime and talked it through and made the right adjustments and got the right looks and ran the right stuff, and that's really when it started to turn."
The Bobcats used an 18-0 run midway through the third frame to pull away from the Lady Griz. The run was sparked by junior Delany Junkermier with eight points and capped by a pair of Hannah Caudill triples.
"The crowd was absolutely phenomenal all around," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "The catapult was Riley's (Nordgaard) tremendous block and Delany (Junkermier) getting out and getting an and-1 back-to-back was the momentum swing that really pushed us to start playing like we play."
The final stanza saw five 3-pointers from the Bobcats, including three by Junkermier, to dash any hope for the Lady Griz. MSU took its largest lead at 19 points with 8:18 remaining in the contest.
Junkermier scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting to tie her career-high. Caudill logged 15 points, shooting 5-of-11 from behind the arc, while Ferris added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Montana native Hailey Nicholson led UM with 13 points.
Montana State will host Idaho State on Wednesday, March 1 in Worthington Arena.
