Two Future Bobcats Make Commitment to Montana State Golf Program

Hailey Oster and Sofia Rodriguez Todd signed their National Letters of Intent to join to the Bobcat golf team as freshmen during the 2018-19 season
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State women's golf team will add two to its roster for the 2018-19 season as head coach Brittany Basye announced on Monday, Nov. 13, that Hailey Oster and Sofia Rodriguez Todd have signed their National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.
"I think it was important that we got these two in this class," Basye said. "We'll be losing an impact player in Jaylee Tait since she's a senior, so trying to replace her, whether it's somebody on the team is unforeseen. So, adding Sofia and Hailey are two players that I think can fill in our lineup."
Oster will join the MSU squad after she completes her prep career at Camas High School in Camas, Wash. A four-time letterwinner for the Papermakers, Oster helped guide her high school team as a junior to a second consecutive runner-up finish at the WIAA 4A state meet this past spring by taking ninth overall with a two-round score of 154.
Oster has earned all-league and all-region first team honors each golf season during her prep career. She's served as a two-time captain for the Papermakers and has been named Camas' Student-Athlete of the Month and the region's Athlete of the Week.
Currently in her senior year, Oster's personal-best 18-hole round is a 72 at the Crosswater Golf Club in Bend, Ore. She hit a hole-in-one as a freshman and has competed in a variety of tournaments including the Future Champions Golf Championship, the USGA Girls' Junior Qualifier and PNGA Qualifier. Oster won the West Combine SKILLS Challenge in 2016 and this past summer was the medalist at the Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial Tournament by winning in playoff holes after shooting a 153 (76-77).
"Hailey will be a good addition and she has some great experience," Basye said. "She's an experienced player over in the Washington area and we like to add players with plenty of experience on the course. She's competed in a lot of tournaments, which is also important to me as well.
"I know she'll fit in on the team personality-wise. She has ties to Bozeman, she loves the university and she's a strong student. She'll be able to come in and compete for us right away."
Rodriguez hails from Madrid, Spain, and has experience at multiple levels of golf. She's played regional, national and international tournaments since she was a 10-year-old and currently attends school while competing for the Golf Federation of Madrid.
Rodriguez had success at a young age, capturing Madrid's U-12 and U-14 championships in 2012 and 2014, respectively. In 2017, Rodriguez has been the first-place finisher in two different Sub-18 tournaments in Madrid. She also has been a member of two team titles at meets as a member of the Federation. She earned a top 15-showing at the Open Barcelona Championship this year and currently has a 3.1 handicap.
Rodriguez will join MSU having played in more than 20 national tournaments and having passed the cut at the Copa Valencia this past year. The future MSU golfer has family that lives in the United States and is fluent in both English and Spanish.
"I think adding Sofia is a win for us," Basye said. "She's a top recruit coming out of Spain. She's a great kid, comes from a great family, she loves golf and has a ton of experience and she plays daily. I think with all of her experience, her strength, her talent and the way she loves the game, it will be a win for Bobcat golf.
"Getting her to adjust to Montana coming from Spain will be the biggest thing for her. She visited Bozeman in the summer and she fell in love with the town and the university. She comes from a great background and she'll make an immediate impact for us."
The Montana State women's golf team returns to play this season on Feb. 12 when the Bobcats begin action at the Battle at the Rock. MSU is scheduled to play in seven tournaments during the spring, including the Big Sky Conference Championship from April 20-22 in Boulder City, Nev.
